Originally published in England under the title "Sorrow in Sunlight", it was published in America under the title "Prancing Nigger" which was subsequently used as the title for this first New Readers Library edition. It is set in a Caribbean republic (compounded of Cuba and Haiti). A socially ambitious black family move from their rural home to the capital, and the story is concerned with their attempts, which prove mainly abortive, to 'get into society'. Pp.126/15(publisher's catalogue), pencil ownership details to front free endpaper, toning to endpapers, spotting to closed page edges occasionally encroachng onto margins. A very good copy of this scarce book. ** "Sallie Rochester Ford was born in 1828 in at Rochester Springs, Mercer Company, Kentucky, United States. Daughter of Colonel James Henry and Demoretta (Pitts) Rochester. Sallie Rochester married Baptist preacher Samuel H. Ford in March 1855.. In 1860 she published "Mary Bunyan: The Blind Dreamer's Daughter", a fictionalized account of the persecution of John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim's Progress. The bulk of the novel dealt with three women surrounding Bunyan and focused on their strength of resolve. Especially moving in this respect was Ford's depiction of the execution of Elizabeth Gaunt, whose death in 1685 allowed Ford to capture the utmost sacrifice a woman could make in service of her faith.." - The Free Library .
