From Publishers Weekly: British author Booth's fifth crime novel (after Blind to the Bones) is as dark and winding as the labyrinth of caves below its Derbyshire setting. In 1990, Det. Constable Ben Cooper's father arrests Mansell Quinn for the brutal murder of his lover. Thirteen years later, Quinn disappears upon his release from prison, his ex-wife is immediately slain, and another murder soon follows. Convinced they're facing a revenge spree, the police mount a manhunt, probing physical clues and the messy web of relationships that Quinn has not quite left behind. The deeper Cooper and his colleagues probe, the more convinced Cooper becomes that Quinn was innocent of the original crime, a belief that deepens his sense that as the son of the arresting officer, he's personally at risk. Though the pace and focus falter slightly toward the end, this is intelligent, suspenseful reading that should continue to build Booth's U. S. audience. A master of psychological suspense, Booth hauntingly evokes the ambiguities of place and the enduring complexity of human relationships. Near Fine/Near Fine. ISBN: 9780007172023

What's Left? [Illustrated]
Fine condition. Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2002. First edition-first printing. Black hardback(gilt lettering to the spine, small nick on the edge of the cover) with Dj(two small nicks, scratch and crease on the Dj cover), both in fine condition. Illustrated with b/w photos. The book is new with two small nicks on the edges of the pages, light shelf wear on the back of Dj cover. 216pp including Tony Booth's Family Tree, list of illustrations and index. Price un-clipped. Product Description nTony Booth didn't just hone his political skills arguing the toss with Alf Garnett. He was born in Liverpool, that hotbed of political activism; his uncle was close to Bessie Braddock, MP and de facto uncrowned monarch of the city; and he did his first canvassing (for Philip Voss, the beaten Labour candidate) at the age of 14 in the 1945 General Election. Throughout an incident-packed life, which includes a very cushy National Service in Paris where he became gigolo to a socialist and former resistance leader, a spell in the Merchant Navy, years in rep before sudden ‘overnight' stardom in Till Death Do Us Part, several marriages (including Pat Phoenix, the femme fatale of Coronation Street, who died of cancer) and an alcoholic lost decade, he has clung to the political principles instilled into him in his youth. These have brought him at various times into collisions with Hugh Gaitskill, Wilson, John Prescott and Gordon Brown, and lifelong friendships with the likes of Michael Foot and Tony Benn. n nNone of this, however, could have prepared him for the happenstance which led his daughter Cherie to fall in love with and marry the future Prime Minister. Tony Booth's position as Tony Blair's father-in-law has given him an uniquely privileged insight into the life of the nation's first political family. And he isn't shy of speaking his mind. Near fine condition. Little, Brown, 2003. First UK edition-first printing. Nice and clean pages as new with light shelf wear on the outer edges. Nice and clean book with light shelf wear on the Dj cover. 440pp including Afterword. Price clipped. Heavy book. Review: Before she died in 1855, Charlotte Bronte completed two chapters of a new novel with the working title Emma. Boylan has constructed her own novel from this tantalizing fragment, in which a girl is deposited at a provincial boarding school under a cloud of mystery. The melodramatic plot revolves around the girl's search for her true identity. Boylan makes use of the characters introduced by Bronte and attempts to borrow her voice by using lines from her letters. She also plunges her heroine into a Dickensian foray into London's slums on the assumption that Charlotte would have wanted to use her own impressions of London as material for her fiction. Whether this novel is anything like the one Charlotte would have written is beside the point; Boylan's work succeeds on its own as a compelling tale. Though rather tame compared to Sarah Waters' Fingersmith (2002) and Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White (2002), it should appeal to readers fascinated by Victorian England and its underside. Blue hardback(silver lettering to the spine) with Dj(some creases, scratches and nicks on the Dj cover), both in near fine condition. Nice and clean pages with a couple ink marks on the outer edges, very small tear, nick and crease on the edges of the pages, small pencil mark impression on the edge of the first blank page of the book. Nice and clean book with light shelf wear. Price un-clipped. 438pp. From Publishers Weekly: Can this be, as advertised, the final episode in the Harte family saga? A Woman of Substance (1979), the story of Emma Harte's triumph over poverty and illegitimacy to found England's greatest department store, and its four sequels were huge bestsellers. Now Emma's great-granddaughter, Linnet O'Neill, must defend the empire and family against evil uncle Jonathan Ainsley. But words such as granddaughter and uncle don't do justice to the complexities. It takes four and a half pages of front matter to enumerate the Harte, Kallinski and O'Neill clans whose intertwining lives drive the saga. Emma's descendants offer a helping hand to new in-laws--and the reader--by uttering sentences such as these: Through his great-grandfather, Winston the First, Emma is Gideon's great-great-aunt. But she is also Gideon's great-grandmother, because Emma was my grandmother. Weddings and funerals keep the local caterer busy and offer crescendos of activity, if scant emotion. Although Ainsley's malevolence hovers behind the story and leads to near disasters, there's never a doubt that the strong women will triumph--though not without struggle. Series devotees will take heart at the ending, which hints that Ainsley's evil will survive his death and the struggles will continue offstage even if Bradford lays down her golden pen. Lady of Avalon
Near fine condition. Michael Joseph, 1997. First UK edition-5th printing. Illustrated with a b/w map. Nice and clean book with light shelf wear. 467pp including List of People in the Story, list of Places in the Story. Price un-clipped. From Booklist: Bradley's sensational Arthurian fantasy, The Mists of Avalon (1982), could never have a sequel, not if Bradley wanted to keep women's power as the main theme, because after Camelot, you will recall, things went steadily downhill. So she retreated and wrote The Forest House (1994), a prequel about the struggle between native Celts and invading Romans in Avalon's home world. This sequel to House and prequel to Mists is set close enough to Arthurian times for such important figures as Merlin and Vivianne to appear, yet far enough before them to allow Bradley's imagination ample scope. In it, three characters capable of reincarnation--a priestess, a mother, and a son--appear in similar relationships in episodes set at the turn of the first to the second century A. D. the end of the third century, and the middle of the fifth century. In each time, Avalon is threatened; the mystic isle survives, of course, but only through sacrifice. Bradley's women are, as usual, strong and vibrant, but never before has she so effectively depicted the heroic male. Near Fine/Near Fine. ISBN: 9780718138554
