Fine condition. Bodleian Library, 2022. First UK edition-first impression. Blue hardback (gilt lettering to the spine, small dent on the edges of the cover) with Dj (small nick on the edges of the Dj cover), both in fine condition. Illustrated with colour, b/w photos, drawings, maps. The book is new. 230pp including Bibliography for Christopher Tolkien, notes, further reading, index. Heavy book Book Description: Over more than four decades J. R. R. Tolkien s son and literary executor, Christopher Tolkien, published some twenty-four volumes of his father s work, much more than his father had succeeded in publishing during his own lifetime. Standing on the mountain of his son s colossal publishing effort and extraordinary scholarship, readers today are therefore able to survey and understand the vastness of the landscape of Tolkien s legendarium. This collection of essays by world-renowned scholars, together with family reminiscences, sheds new light on J. R. R. Tolkien s work, his son Christopher s unique gifts in communicating and interpreting that work and the debt owed to Christopher by the many Tolkien scholars who were privileged to work with him. What was Tolkien s intended ending for 'The Lord of the Rings'? Did it leave echoes in the stripped-down version that was actually published? What was the audience s response to the first ever adaptation of 'The Lord of the Rings' a radio dramatization that has now been deleted forever from the BBC s archives? What was the significance of the extraordinary array of doorways which confronted the hobbits as they journeyed through Middle-earth? The book is illustrated with colour reproductions of J. R. R. Tolkien s manuscripts, maps, drawings and letters and, with the kind permission of his estate, photographs of Christopher Tolkien and extracts from his works, some of which have never been seen before, making this volume essential reading for Tolkien scholars, readers and fans. VGC. Hodder & Stoughton, 1987. First UK edition-first printing. Blue hardback(gilt lettering to the spine) with Dj(a couple of creases, nicks and a scratch on the Dj cover), both in VGC. Illustrated with b/w photos. Nice and clean pages with some foxing marks and slightly tainted and yellow on the outer edges, some foxing marks and yellow on the edges of the pages, small pencil mark impression on the edge of the first blank page of the book, light shelf wear inside the edges of the Dj cover. The book is in VGC but with some shelf wear. 617pp including Reagan's family tree, notes, bibliography and index. Price clipped. Heavy book. First UK edition. Product Description: In this biography, Anne Edwards concentrates on the early years of Ronald Reagan - his childhood poverty, film stardom and his politicization via the Screen Actor's Guild. Reagan grew up in small towns in Illiinois. Known as Dutch by his friends, he was athletic and made his reputation locally as a lifeguard, where he was credited with saving 77 lives in a fast-running river. Trying his hand at radio sports reporting revealed a talent which led him to Hollywood and, eventually, a contract with Warner Brothers. Research for this biography involved interviews with over 200 people important in the life of Reagan and access to the Warner Brothers archives, which also provide information on the Hollywood of the period. Anne Edwards is author of Haunted Summer, which has been filmed, and Vivien Leigh, and is also biographer of Katherine Hepburn, Judy Garland and Margaret Mitchell. Very Good/Very Good. Eggers, Dave
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Near fine/VGC. Picador, 2000. First UK edition-10th printing. Pictorial hardback(small nick on the edges of the cover) in near fine condition, with Dj(small tear on the edges of the front Dj cover, a couple of creases, scratches and nicks on the edges of the Dj cover) in VGC. Nice and clean pages with two small ink marks and nicks on the outer edges, two small nicks on the edge of the pages, light shelf wear on the Dj cover. 406pp including Incomplete guide to symbols and metaphors, preface to this edition. Heavy book. Review: Dave Eggers is a terrifically talented writer; don't hold his cleverness against him. What to make of a book called A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: Based on a True Story? For starters, there's a good bit of staggering genius before you even get to the true story, including a preface, a list of Rules and Suggestions for Enjoyment of This Book, and a 20-page acknowledgements section complete with special mail-in offer, flow chart of the book's themes, and a lovely pen-and-ink drawing of a stapler (helpfully labeled Here is a drawing of a stapler:). n nBut on to the true story. At the age of 22, Eggers became both an orphan and a single mother when his parents died within five months of one another of unrelated cancers. In the ensuing sibling division of labor, Dave is appointed unofficial guardian of his 8-year-old brother, Christopher. The two live together in semi-squalor, decaying food and sports equipment scattered about, while Eggers worries obsessively about child-welfare authorities, molesting babysitters, and his own health. His child-rearing strategy swings between making his brother's upbringing manically fun and performing bizarre developmental experiments on him. (Case in point: his idea of suitable bedtime reading is John Hersey's Hiroshima. ) n nThe book is also, perhaps less successfully, about being young and hip and out to conquer the world (in an ironic, media-savvy, Gen-X way, naturally). In the early '90s, Eggers was one of the founders of the very funny Might Magazine, and he spends a fair amount of time here on Might, the hipster culture of San Francisco's South Park, and his own efforts to get on to MTV's Real World. This sort of thing doesn't age very well--but then, Eggers knows that. There's no criticism you can come up with that he hasn't put into A. H. W. O. S. G. already. The book thereafter is kind of uneven, he tells us regarding the contents after page 109, and while that's true, it's still uneven in a way that is funny and heartfelt and interesting. n nAll this self-consciousness could have become unbearably arch. It's a testament to Eggers's skill as a writer--and to the heartbreaking particulars of his story--that it doesn't. Currently the editor of the footnote-and-marginalia-intensive journal McSweeney's (the last issue featured an entire story by David Foster Wallace printed tinily on its spine), Eggers comes from the most media-saturated generation in history--so much so that he can't feel an emotion without the sense that it's already been felt for him. What may seem like postmodern noodling is really just Eggers writing about pain in the only honest way available to him. Oddly enough, the effect is one of complete sincerity, and--especially in its concluding pages--this memoir as metafiction is affecting beyond all rational explanation. Near Fine/Very Good.
