The Goldfish Bowl
London: Victor Gollancz, 1987. First British Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0575039353. DJ in Mylar, unclipped. Book has light wear and shelf soiling, lightly yellowed pages. DJ has some creasing.; A bright, solid book, DJ in Mylar ; Willows and Parker #1; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; This is the first Willows and Parker Vancouver based mystery "At first, the targets of Vancouver's serial killer seem totally unrelated, except for the engine of their deaths a Winchester 460 Magnum rifle. But one of the victims is detective David Atkinson, and that makes it very personal for the Vancouver police, and especially for Jack Willows and his new partner, Claire Parker, who take over the investigation, learning about each other as they try to track down the wily sniper. Gough's first novel is an absorbing psychological thriller. He has a sure sense of pace that generates and sustains tension, and a gift for authentic, gritty dialogue. He's persuasive in his description of the progressive dementia of the assassin, even though he unfairly withholds clues to the killer's identity, not granting even the astute reader a fair chance to use deductive powers. The solution to the puzzle arrives without preparation, but with enormous shock value. The final scene is nail-biting drama, closing an entertaining novel that augurs well for Gough's future in this genre.". Very Good in Very Good dust jacket .

GUNN, MRS AENEAS, We of the Never
GUNN, MRS AENEAS
We of the Never
London: Hutchinson Publishing Group, [1908] 1961. Later Printing. Hardcover. DJ shows some shelf wear with archivally repaired tears; A tight solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. Hinges intact. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 256 pages; "We of the Never Never (1908) is an autobiographical novel by Jeannie Gunn. Based on her experience accompanying her husband Aeneas to the remote cattle station of Elsey, Gunn’s novel is a fascinating masterpiece of Australian literature that explores the landscape of the continent’s Northern Territory while depicting the tense relationship between white settlers and the Aboriginal people they displaced. Sympathetic and utterly human, Gunn’s voice is a testament to her bravery as the first woman to settle in the Mataranka area, where she lived for just over a year until her husband’s tragic death from malaria. “To begin somewhere near the beginning, the Maluka-better known at that time as the new Boss for the Elsey-and I, his ‘missus,’ were at Darwin, in the Northern Territory, waiting for the train that was to take us just as far as it could-one hundred and fifty miles-on our way to the Never-Never. It was out of town just then, up-country somewhere, billabonging in true bush-whacker style, but was expected to return in a day or two, when it would be at our service.” Determined to follow her husband wherever he goes, “little Missus” braves the harsh trek to the distant cattle station where he has been appointed overseer. Over hundreds of miles on horseback, they observe for the first time the natural beauty of some of the wildest landscapes on Earth. Although the local cattle drovers are initially wary of her presence, the narrator proves herself as a courageous and hardworking woman, a friend of settlers and Aboriginal people alike. ". Light wear to card covers; A bright, solid book, text unmarked ; Northwest Reprints; 8.4 X 5.9 X 0.7 inches; 410 pages; "Robert Haig-Brown, best known as the author of books about fly-fishing, especially A River Never Sleeps, drew on personal experience as a logger in writing this novel of the northwest woods. Timber is the story of a friendship between two men, their work, their loves, and their involvement in the struggle over unionization of loggers. It is a stirring story of an earlier time, when trees were still "thick as hair on the back of a dog," and when people of conscience were concerned about the well being of the men who felled great trees, rather than the survival of the trees.".
