De reislustige regent Gerard Hinlopen (1644–1691) monsterde in de lente van het jaar 1670 aan als luxepassagier op een oorlogsschip, dat een groot handelskonvooi begeleidde naar het Ottomaanse Rijk. Onderweg ontsnapte de jongeman uit Hoorn aan een aanval van Barbarijse piraten en bracht hij een nacht door in een Livornese cel. Maar hij bereikte heelhuids de havenstad Izmir, de eindbestemming van het konvooi. Hier besloot hij op eigen gelegenheid door te reizen naar de Ottomaanse hoofdstad Istanbul. Deze reis was levensgevaarlijk, maar getuige Hinlopens spannende en humorvolle reisverslag bleek zij de moeite meer dan waard. De reis van Gerard Hinlopen speelt zich af aan de vooravond van het Rampjaar 1672, waarin er een einde kwam aan het staatsgezinde bewind van de Ware Vrijheid. In Hoorn kregen de aanhangers van stadhouder Willem III het voor het zeggen. Het staatsgezinde regentengeslacht Hinlopen stond nu met lege handen. Gerard liet het er niet bij zitten en besloot tot een subtiel protest. In de opschriftstelling van zijn Istanbulreis zette hij het Ottomaanse Rijk neer als een afschrikwekkend voorbeeld voor de Republiek. De slaafachtige samenleving die was ontstaan onder het despotische bewind van de Ottomaanse sultans, zo impliceerde de jonge regent, kwam met het aantreden van de stadhouder akelig dichtbij.
