Duodecimo half brown calf, green cloth boards (tips worn/spine rubbed of most of its gilt) x +[2] +111 pages. A few finger marks but nice neat and tight. *Written for his children by the printer, John Edward Taylor, in the preface he traces the origin of these fables from the Eastern Hindoo tradition rather than the Aesopic FABLE. There are 21 fables in this collection.

Post octavo red pictorial cl oth (tips worn/vent to foot) viii + 152pp. Using the Croxall translation of Aesop the Rev. George Fyler Townsend added morals and applications thus The Fox & The Crow moral is Flattery Finds Favour and the Application Compliments cost nothing but many pay dear for them.

Small Quarto (20x15cm) half-calf (rebacked, sunned) LACKING all before A-3 (pg.5) half-title for Part II used as Titlepage; also LACKING all after c-3 (pg.222). The first English Emblem Book, although printed at Leyden: Very Rare. Dedicated to Robt. Dudley Earl of Leicester + p203 has an emblem praising Sir Francis Drake. Various pages repaired, some with manuscript notes cropped. Partial colouring on some pages most notable p30, 33, 40, 64, 65, 68, 83, 90-100, 166, 167, 168, 173. LACKING pages 71-82. Holes / tears in pages 37, 67, 93, 103, 107, 109. *Imperfect copy, but the missing 1st titlepage and some text supplied in manuscript by a former English owner. Wanelaar [frontis.} + J.Schijnvoet. . sm.8vo vellum laced-through (tips worn/vellum sl. darkened) half title + engraved title +printed titlepage +[30pp incl.dediction + to reader +laudatory poems etc.] +128pp +half title leaf +[2p =poem] + 65pp [1p=blank] +[4p index] +(2p=blank] front fly leaf cut into half & loose half laid in.Small stamp [=2.by 0.8cm] ["Verwiu??no kun.biel.] to back of titlepage but it is rather feint so not sure of words]. The end papers are a bit marked and edges of pages are pale tan or sl.foxed and there are some other signs of use but the paper is crisp and strong with a watermark that includes a lion? And a armorial bearing but since only part of the watermark is visible at the gutter edge we cannot determine the origin of the paper. The illustrations are in a variety of frames with a title to the bottom of the frame. They are very clean and full of detail with poems and verses throughout. A few signs of use but a pleasing neat tight copy of this emblem book published without author's name. Each emblem has an oval illustration taking up about one third of the page.
