[BURMA - PHOTOGRAPHS]., A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.
[BURMA - PHOTOGRAPHS].
A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.
. Twenty-five photographs with images of Rangoon and Mandalay, while the last two are of Penang Island and the Bridge of Penta K›ta. Each photo measures about 15 x 23 cm, four are slightly smaller. The photographs are pasted on grey thick paper (27 x 35 cm) with manuscript caption labels in French. A few of the photographs with minor silvering of the photo margins, the paper mounts have some mild traces of moisture exposure but overall the condition is very good. This is an interesting documentation of British Burma at the turn of the 20th century. (Burma was under British rule between 1886 and 1948). Fifteen of the photos are devoted to Rangoon and its vicinity; of the harbour, street scenes, elephant at work, several of the Shuedagon pagoda, of the Sule pagoda and a few of the countryside. Eight of the photos are taken in Mandalay: city views, the market, Shewenandaw Monastery and the Palace. The Mandalay Palace, built in 1857-9, was the primary royal residence of the last two kings of the country (King Mindon and King Thibaw) up until the Third Burmese War and the annexation by the British Empire. During World War II most of the palace compound was destroyed. The Shewenandaw Monastery is the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace today.

JUDSON, SARAH B. & JUDSON, EMILY C.:
Questions on the Apostles. Two volumes bound in one. Maulmain, American Baptist Mission Press, Thomas S. Ranney printer, 1848.
. 16mo. Lvs (73) + (52). With Burmese text, title pages in English. Some staining to front endpaper. Contemporary half calf cloth boards lightly rubbed and stained. First Burmese edition, printed in 500 copies. Provenance: Nashua Historical Society, inscription by Mrs. S. Noyes dated 1873. Very rare work by two American women missionaries serving in Burma.Sarah Hall, American-born missionary, arrived in Burma in 1827 together with her first husband George Broadman. Eventually they settled in Tavoy where they established schools and church for the Karen people. Broadman died in 1831 and a few years later Sarah married missionary Adoniram Judson, one of the pioneers of missionary work in Burma. Sarah made many translations of scriptures, devotional poetry, prepared a hymn book and compiled several books of scripture questions for Sunday schools. Due to poor health Sarah, along with her husband, was on her way home to the USA when she died on St Helena in 1845. Emily Chubbock (with the pen name Fanny Forester) became Adoniram Judson's third wife. They sailed together for Burma in 1846 and there Emily devoted herself to missionary work, wrote and translated several works. She compiled the second part of this work, a continuation of the first part made by Sarah, here posthumously published. "I am now engaged in writing questions on the Acts of the Apostles, in Burmese, for the use of the Bible Classes and Sabbath School. We have a Sabbath School, numbering nearly a hundred children, and a Bible Class of twenty adults" (Fanny Forrester "Memoir of Sarah B. Judson" 1860, p. 162). Not in Cordier.
