GEBHARD, DAVID & HARRIETTE VON BRETON (CURATE); GEBHARD, DAVID & HARRIETTE VON BRETON (CURATE)
Kem Weber the Moderne in Southern California 1920 Through 1941
University of California Press, 1969. Paperback. Now in a protective mylar cover. Second edition. Slight signs of use. Less than 2,000 copies printed in all three editions. First edition 600 copies, second edition 750 copies, third edition 750 copies. All editions are scarce. The Art Galleries, University of California, Santa Barbara. February 11 to March 23 1969. 113 black and white photos and drawings. Architectural historian David Gebhard showcased Kem Weber as the centerpiece of his 1969 exhibition at the University Art Museum, UCSB - the first exhibition in the United States to evaluate Art Deco and the Moderne as a design movement. This is the only book published to date exclusively on Weber designs. Includes his designs for architecture, furniture, interior design and clocks. Kem Weber (1889-1963) , a native of Berlin, travelled to America in 1914 and was stranded due to the War. He then settled in California and was active in the formative years of the California modern design community, establishing his studio in Los Angeles in 1927. His approach to design was "to make the practical more beautiful and the beautiful more practical." As an architect and industrial designer he adapted the rounded corners of the streamlined style, designing items like cocktail shakers for Friedman Silver of New York and clocks for Lawson Time Company in Alhambra between 1934-1935. Weber achieved national prominence during the 1930s when he was singled out by critics as the first on the West Coast to bring a tradition-free, machine-age creativity to American interior design. Of his famous and now classic 'Airline chair', he wrote that he was guided by the "desire to make a comfortable, hygienic and beautiful chair inexpensively." ; black and white photographs; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 107 pages. Very Good+ .

Giambattista Tiepolo

Protected in a decorative slipcase. A lovely new copy with beautiful color and black and white illustrations. Would not look out of place in a new bookshop. Book Description - "Published to coincide with an exhibition in Venice and New York to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Italian 18th-century painter, Giambattista Tiepolo, this study explores the various aspects of his work. Essays by eight American and European authorities illuminate his development: his mastery of mythological and poetic subjects; his deeply moving religious pictures; and his rare excursions into portraiture and studies of the ideal head. It also describes a prominent feature of Tiepolo's work; his method of progression from initial ideas - realized in dazzling small-scale oil sketches - to large canvases and frescoes. Written for the scholar and general reader alike, the text is supported by illustrations of Tiepolo's works and those of his predecessors and contemporaries." May require extra shipping to outside U. GIBSON, JON L.; GIBSON, JON L.
The Ancient Mounds of Poverty Point Place of Rings
University Press of Florida, 2001. Paperback. ISBN: ISBN 0813025516. Carefully protected within a clear archival dust jacket. Small crease to front cover. Also laid in "A driving Trail Guide". From the Publisher...Jon Gibson confronts the intriguing mystery of Poverty Point, the ruins of a large prehistoric Indian settlement that was home to one of the most fascinating ancient cultures in eastern North America. The 3,500-year-old site in northeastern Louisiana is known for its large, elaborate earthworks--a series of concentric, crescent-shaped dirt rings and bird-shaped mounds. With its imposing 25-mile core, it is one of the largest archaic constructions on American soil. It's also one of the most puzzling--perplexing questions haunt Poverty Point, and archaeologists still speculate about life and culture at the site, its age, how it was created, and if it was at the forefront of an emerging complex society. Gibson's engaging, well-illustrated account of Poverty Point brings to life one of the oldest earthworks of its size in the Western Hemisphere, the hub of a massive exchange network among native American peoples reaching a third of the way across the present-day United States. ; Native Peoples, Cultures, and Places of the Southeastern United States; Black and white illustration; 8.98 X 6.04 X 0.85 inches; 292 pages. GILES, JAMES RICHARD; GILES, JAMES RICHARD
Irwin Shaw
Twayne Pub, 1983. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0805773827. Appears unread. Some foxing to foreedges. Book was owned by Gloria Jones, the widow of James Jones, the author of "From here to Eternity". Gift inscription written from Giles to Gloria Jones. A very interesting typed and signed very personal letter is laid in from James R. Giles to Gloria Jones dated May 1983 in which Giles says that he hopes she will enjoy the book and an explanation of his feelings about a novel he is writing. It is not stated which novel, presumably Gloria would know, but really spells out, in a disheartening and depressed way, his response to early criticisms of the novel. Giles also mentions a role he is to have in a movie about James Jones. Giles comments on a relationship failure he had with someone names "Shaye". Altogether very interesting background. ; Twayne's United States Authors Series; 8.10 X 5.60 X 0.90 inches; 202 pages; Signed by Author. Very Good .
