The area called Waropen is located along the east coast of Geelvink Bay roughly between the islands of Nau and Kurudu. The area has traditionally been divided into two, namely Lower Waropen, which is located between the island of Nau and the village of Koweda, and Upper Waropen, which is located between Koweda and the island of Kurudu. The languages of the East Geelvink Bay family, which include the Waropen language, are spoken in the Waropen regency (Papua Province, Indonesia) . The main ethnic groups that inhabit this regency are the Waropen people, and the Biak who generally inhabit coastal areas. In Lower Waropen the Austronesian language Waropen is spoken, and the children usually speak Malay. Waropen is also spoken in three villages outside the Waropen area, namely in Napan-Weinami and Makimi, which are located about 45 kilometers northeast of the town of Nabire, and in Ambumi, which is located in Wandamen Bay. Several Papuan languages, including Bauzi, are spoken in Upper Waropen. The linguistic situation there is not very well known. Good/Fair.

The publisher and author John Nichols (1745-1826), assisted by the collector and literary critic George Steevens, published a life of Hogarth and a list of his works in 1781, and as disputes increasingly arose over the genuineness of some of the prints attributed to him, enlarged versions appeared in 1782 and 1785. This work, published between 1808 and 1817, is the last in the sequence of Nichols' works on Hogarth, and remains a useful source for art historians and anyone interested in the cultural life of the eighteenth century. Volume II contains a catalogue of his works, an appendix of anecdotes about some of Hogarth's subjects, and his essay The Analysis of Beauty. Good/Fair.

OGILVIE, ASTRID E.J. AND JONSSON, TRAUSTI (EDITED BY)
The Iceberg in the Mist: Northern Research in Pursuit of a "Little Ice Age"
Kluwer Academic Publishers. 2001. Hardcover. Book, 2001, Very Good Condition, Hardcover, 263 pp THE ''LITTLE ICE AGE'': LOCAL AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES P. D. JONES and K. R. BRIFFA Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ, UK. This volume of Climatic Change is devoted to the study of the climate of the last 1000 years, with a major emphasis on the last few centuries. The timespan encompasses what has been referred to as the ''Little Ice Age'' (Bradley, 1992). This term was originally coined by glaciologists, with reference to the most recent major glacial advance of the Holocene (Bradley and Jones, 1993). Although other such advances in different parts of the world may not have been synchronous, the term ''Little Ice Age'' has come to be associated with the period of a widespread foreward movement of European glaciers between about 14 50 to 1850, as well as with relatively cooler temperatures. The issue of whether or not this concept is appropriate, is a major theme of many of the papers included in this volume. Near Fine.

TOMSON, PETER J. & DORIS LAMBERS-PETRY (EDITORS), The Image of the Judaeo-Christians in Ancient Jewish & Christian Literature
TOMSON, PETER J. & DORIS LAMBERS-PETRY (EDITORS)
The Image of the Judaeo-Christians in Ancient Jewish & Christian Literature
Mohr Siebeck. 2003. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, Very Good Condition, Hardcover + Dustjacket, 340pp Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen Zum Neuen Testament, 158 This conference volume draws the ancient Judaeo-Christians from the obscurity to which they are confined in prevailing historical approaches. To that aim, the evidence from both Jewish and Christian sources is interpreted by scholars of Judaism, theology, archaeology and history. The essays explore the impact of the Jewish wars against Rome, early Christian observance of Jewish commandments; anti-Judaeo-Christian polemics in the New Testament; the importance of Peter, James, and other relatives of Jesus in (Judaeo-) Christian tradition; the Judaeo-Christian affiliations of Ebionites, Elkasaites, and Gnostics; and evidence concerning Judaeo-Christians from an archaeological site in the Land of Israel, from rabbinic literature, and from the Toledot Yeshu. The volume concludes with observations on present-day Messianic Jews and Christian missions to the Jews in the post-Shoa era. Very Good/Very Good.

TATJANA SOLDAT-JAFFE, Twenty-First Century Yiddishism : Language, Identity. And the New Jewish Studies
TATJANA SOLDAT-JAFFE
Twenty-First Century Yiddishism : Language, Identity. And the New Jewish Studies
Sussex Academic Press. 2012. Hardcover. Book, 2012, Very Good Condition, Hardcover, 178pp Drawing on sociolinguistics and cultural studies, Twenty-First Century Yiddishism examines the transnational critical debates about teaching Yiddish over the last hundred years. The book looks at the ways a contested pedagogical terrain comes to define a minority language's ongoing resources of cultural and ideological resilience. From the inaugural international academic conference on the language held in 1908 in the Austro-Hungarian empire, to the rise of Yiddish home-schooling, and the surge of interest as a subject of secondary language study in recent years, the status, turf-sharing conflicts, and pedagogical frictions surrounding the shuttling of Yiddish back-and-forth reveal a fraught, yet surprisingly dynamic, situation. Through historical and comparative analysis - including archival work, surveys, interviews, close textual reading, discourse analysis, and ideological critique - the book reports on three critical case studies for the language's futurity: ultra-orthodox Jewry in the UK, heritage learners in the US, and multi-cultural non-Jewish learners in Germany. It addresses several timely preoccupations in the fields of both Jewish Studies and Linguistics, pulling together multiple strands from the humanities and the social sciences concerning the evolving politics of language, pedagogy, transnationalism and diaspora, the meaning of heritage languages, and religious and ethnic identity in the modern era. Twenty-First Century Yiddishism will be of keen interest to all who study these disciplines academically, as well as other readers in literary studies, cultural studies, anthropology, and history. This is a welcome contribution to the field of Yiddish and socio-linguistics..The divergent yet related areas of Yiddish study addressed here raise many interesting questions. Indeed, each chapter could be expanded into its own book. Recommended for academic libraries, especially collections including Jewish studies and socio-linguistics. Fine.
