ANSTEY, F. [ie Thomas Anstey Guthrie].
A Bayard From Bengal. Being some account of the magnificent and spanking career of Chunder Bindabun Bhosh, Esq. B.A., Cambridge, by Hurry Bungsho Jabberjee, B.A., Calcutta University, ...
London, Methuen 1902. Octavo publisher's cloth with mounted illustration; eight plates by Bernard Partridge, 40pp publisher's list dated August 1902. A touch of browning and minor signs of use, a rather good copy.
¶ First edition of this spanking example of comedy that can no longer be funny; a slur from the caption on the frontispiece to the very last word. Anstey specialised in fish out of water - or stranger in a strange land - situation comedy, often fantastic, and I get him mixed up with his imitator with a parallel pseudonym, R. Andom who specialised in identity exchange. Here we follow the adventures of our Indian hero in Oxford and highish society as portrayed by a fellow Anglophile and drawn by a last minute stand in for the desired Royal Academician, whose ignorance of things British needs constant correction. All this sparked a letter to the Spectator from an Andra Singha in September 1902 complaining that Anstey's mockery of Indian writings in English was too easy a target, tired and misguided. Anstey's mockery of Indians themselves was not worth tackling.

Architecture., The International Competition for the Phoebe Hearst Architectural Plan for the University of California.
Architecture.
The International Competition for the Phoebe Hearst Architectural Plan for the University of California.
San Francisco, published by the trustees [1899]. Oblong folio publisher's printed wrapper, cord tied (front wrapper and spine chipped); 150pp - 41 introductory pages in four languages; the rest renderings, plans, elevations, photo illustrations.
¶ Parisian Emile Benard won the competition but wouldn't come to San Francisco to see it built and the university ended up, for the most part, in the hands of local John Howard (fourth prize). It's easy to see Benard's appeal - his design is of the style and scale of an imperial capital which would have pleased both Hearst and Wallot, one of the judges. At first glance I would have said that the design of third prize winners Despradelle and Codman owed something to Burley Griffin, except that of course at this time he was barely up to sharpening pencils for Dwight Perkins. I think all 11 premiated plans are illustrated.

Shop architecture., [Shoten Kenchiku Oyobi Tento Keikaku Zuan].
Shop architecture.
[Shoten Kenchiku Oyobi Tento Keikaku Zuan].
Tokyo, Kenchikushoin 1924 (Taisho 13). Oblong folio, 26x39cm publisher's decorated cloth (a couple of nibbles) and mildly battered printed card case; [10]pp, 50 b/w plates, [4]pp. A nice copy.
¶ Modern and moderne shop buildings and store fronts; essential if you want to rebuild Tokyo after the earthquake and before the fire bombing. This is, of course, part of the post earthquake reconstruction effort: the results of a competition held by the equivalent of the Tokyo chamber of commerce. The plates, elevations and floor plans, are reproduced from measured drawings and look ready to build but I wonder about one (by Shibahara Niro) which, the facade at least, seems to be taken straight from Bruno Taut's crystal alpine architecture. The requirements: frontage, height etc, are spelt out in the introduction and I presume fit an average commercial lot. At the end are designs for shop fronts.

ARLEN, Michael.
Man's Mortality. A story.
London, Heinemann 1933. Octavo, very good in publisher's cloth and dustwrapper.
¶ First edition of Arlen's dystopian science fiction and one of his least successful books. Set fifty odd years in the future, world hegemony is in the hands of a mutli-national company that got its start with a world changing invention in aviation.

Yokohama Temperance Association.
[Kinshu Karenda]. 1929.
Yokohama Kinshukai 1928. 38x17cm publisher's colour illustrated wrapper with (crooked) metal strip along the top; 12 leaves printed on one side, each with a color illustration and advertisement.
¶ This is the reason why someone with even my momentary attention span can remain fascinated with Japan in the late 19th and early 20th century. There is always something I never imagined might exist. Here we have the 1929 Temperance Calendar from the Yokohama Temperance Association. If there are any for other years or from other local associations I haven't find them yet. The temperance movement arrived in Japan with American Christians, of course, and blossomed despite some anti-Christian schisms early in the 20th century. They never achieved prohibition but did get the still current under age law passed in 1922, setting the legal drinking age at 20. One of the leaders of the early temperance movement was Ando Taro, former Consul General in Hawaii. He, on his own account, had been a heavy drinker from his early teens until his wife put an end to his drinking in Honolulu. Seems to me that despite being on the wrong side in the Boshin War and a year in prison, becoming Consul General in Honolulu before the age of 40 shows that the boozing was, at least, not so harmful, maybe beneficial.

Report from the Joint Select Committee on the Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum, together with the proceedings ... and minutes of evidence.
Brisbane, Govt printer 1869. Foolscap disbound; [4],73pp and nine litho plates: plans and elevations.
¶ Woogaro, Queensland's first lunatic asylum, was opened in 1865 and was a disaster: built in the wrong place, badly staffed, badly managed, with woefully inadequate buildings. Two inquiries were held in 1869, one by public servants and this one by a parliamentary committee. The focus here is on the buildings, the general plan and proper management. From this inquiry came the 1869 Lunacy Act. The committee recommend buildings on the "cottage" system and given the choice between plans by Tiffin and Suter - illustrated here - chose Suter's. He crammed twice the number of patients into each building at a saving of £18 per head.

Correspondence Relating to Chinese Immigration into the Australasian Colonies, with a return of acts passed by the legislatures of those colonies and of Canada and British Columbia on the subject.
London, HMSO 1888. Foolscap, very good in a modern wrapper; x,87pp.
¶ An essential Yellow Peril document gathering details of policy, procedure and personality during a particularly active, perhaps turbulent, period of antagonism and legislation. Collected here are official dispatches and unofficial enclosures, news from all parts of the world and protests from the Chinese. Much of the proud tradition of strict quarantine in Australia has its origin in intercolonial co-operation in declaring ports of embarkation for Chinese immigrants as Infected Places. Prior to this attempts to establish a national quarantine policy had little success.

BADHAM, C. David., Prose Halieutics or Ancient and Modern Fish Tattle.
BADHAM, C. David.
Prose Halieutics or Ancient and Modern Fish Tattle.
London, Parker 1854. Octavo blindstamped straight grained green/blue cloth; xii,552pp. An excellent, fresh and bright copy.
¶ An enthusiastic delver's book of the best type. Badham has scratched together (much from classical writers) a wealth of recondite facts and fancies about fish - from the water to the table. He begins with ancient and modern fishing and ends with chapters on opsophagy (the eating of delicacies), covering ancient fish-dealers and their tricks, Greek cooks and gluttony. Other chapters wind through such things as fish in medicine, subterranean fish, the Naples fish-market, the etymology of Cod, spurious fish sauces, ancient fishing tackle, the uses of stingray hide, and Pliny's mistakes about Lampreys. While there is enough here to satisfy any student of any aspect of fish (or classics) its greatest value now may well be to those interested in cookery, food and their history.
