ALLEN, ANTHONY JOHN
Allen's Introduction to Later Chinese Porcelain
Allen's Enterprises Ltd, New Zealand. 1996, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0473038366). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22 x 31 cm; 1,3 Kg; 222 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear. Front cover slightly faded on top.; Chinese porcelain of the period 1820 through 1920, to date has been the province of a minority of academic authors and a few adventurous dealers and collectors. This misunderstood but fascinating field of study is now brought within the reach of the average collector. Written with interests of novice collectors and dealers in mind, superbly illustrated in colour throughout, each of the introductory chapters conclude with suggestions for further reading, thus providing a fast but solid grounding for the primary focus of the book: dating of later Chinese porcelains. This book discusses marks, reign marks, footrims, glazes, bubbles, flaws and imperfections and other indications of a date of manufacture, including the contentious subjects of "hollow line" and the "reversed S"; illustrating in close-up many of the features used by the author to substantiate his assertions. Unashamedly provocative, Allen concludes with chapters on those subjects which most earlier writers have previously treated as "taboo", including "Modern Fakes and Their Detection", "Buying Tips in Asia" and "Recommendations for Investments". Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

ALLEN, ANTHONY JOHN
Allen's Authentication of Later Chinese Porcelain (1796ad - 1999ad)
Allen's Enterprises Ltd, New Zealand. 2000, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0473065827). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22 x 31 cm; 1,5 Kg; 264 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear. Interior as new.; Allen's Authentication of Later Chinese Porcelain continues on from the earlier Allen's Introduction to Later Chinese Porcelain, in a more detailed examination of aspects of dating; providing even the novice collector or dealer with information, dating techniques and illustrations, which would otherwise take yours to learn. The focus of the work is primarily on the dating of porcelain made between the beginning of the Jiaqing reign in 1796AD, and ending in the penultimate year of the 20th century, 1999. As many of the porcelains made in this 200 year period were copies of earlier periods, there are also a number of illustrations of genuine porcelain and pottery pieces made in the late Ming and earlier Qing dynasties, i.e. prior to 1796AD. Progressing chronologically through the late Qing dynasty reigns of Jianqing through Xuantong, this book examines porcelain of the Republic period (1912 to 1949), and then the Mao and post-Mao period of the People's Republic of China; before concluding with a preliminary look at the dating of Chinese redwares, and details of the author's visit to Jingdezhen in 1998. With over 480 full colour illustrations, not only of the items but their backs and undersides, close-ups of marks, footrims and glazes, this book was the most detailed English language text to on the dating of Chinese porcelain of this period at the time it was published. The author's often blunt and provocative commentary will undoubtedly offend some quarters of the Asian art world. But collectors for generations to come will thank him for his advice on detecting the bane of every collector«s life - the Chinese porcelain fake made intentionally to deceive. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

CORT, LOUISE ALLISON; AND STUART, JAN; WITH A CONTRIBUTION BY TAM, LAURENCE CHI-SING
Joined Colours: Decoration and Meaning in Chinese Porcelain. Ceramics from Collectors in the Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.in association with Tai Yip Company, Hong Kong. 1993. (ISBN: 9623210248). Soft cover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Paperback; 21.8 x 28.2 cm; 0.720 Kg; 158 pages with 165 colour plates and 7 black-and-white illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear; Catalogue from the exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, January 31-November 28, 1993.; The Gemlike beauty of multicoloured enamel decoration on white porcelain - sometimes akin to painting, sometimes echoing the rich texture of silk brocades, lacquers, and cloisonne - is the focus of this volume of seventy-nine Chinese porcelains of the Ming and Qing dynasties drawn from renowned collections of members of the Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong. Although polychrome porcelain is most often examined from the perspectives of authenticity, dating, and stylistic development, this study addresses the crucial issue of meaning. Through an exploration of the emblematic significance of individual colours and of colour combinations (including the famed doucai color scheme from which this book takes its name) and the auspicious meaning of imagery, the authors have placed these impressive ceramics within a framework of Chinese cultural values. The catalogue is lavishly illustrated in colour, with detailed descriptions of the objects focusing on decoration and the use of under - and overglazed enamels. Reign marks are illustrated for each piece. This book will be of great interest to collectors and students of porcelain, scholars, and all those who love ceramics and Chinese art. GERRITSEN, ANNE AND RIELLO, GIORGIO (EDITORS)
The Global Lives of Things: The Material Culture of Connections in the Early Modern World
Routledge, Oxon. 2016. (ISBN: 9781183776753). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 16 x 23.5 cm; 0.480 Kg; 266 pages with 4 black-and-white illustrations; New book. May show signs of shelf wear.; The Global Lives of Things considers the ways in which 'things', ranging from commodities to works of art and precious materials, participated in the shaping of global connections in the period 1400-1800. By focusing on the material exchange between Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia, this volume traces the movements of objects through human networks of commerce, colonialism and consumption. It argues that material objects mediated between the forces of global economic exchange and the constantly changing identities of individuals, as they were drawn into global circuits. It proposes a reconceptualization of early modern global history in the light of its material culture by asking the question: what can we learn about the early modern world by studying its objects? This exciting new collection draws together the latest scholarship in the study of material culture and offers students a critique and explanation of the notion of commodity and a reinterpretation of the meaning of exchange. It engages with the concepts of 'proto-globalization', 'the first global age' and 'commodities/consumption'. Divided into three parts, the volume considers in Part One, Objects of Global Knowledge, in Part Two, Objects of Global Connections, and finally, in Part Three, Objects of Global Consumption. The collection concludes with afterwords from three of the leading historians in the field, Maxine Berg, Suraiya Faroqhi and Paula Findlen, who offer their critical view of the methodologies and themes considered in the book and place its arguments within the wider field of scholarship. Extensively illustrated, and with chapters examining case studies from Northern Europe to China and Australia, this book will be essential reading for students of global history. New/No Jacket.

It provides the first comprehensive study of what is probably the world's best private collection of pieces for the European market and contains new research into the subject of Chinese export porcelain and enamelled copper. The three-volume set of hardcover books includes chapters on earthenware, stoneware and porcelain of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, works with Western shapes and decoration and armorial Chinese export porcelain. It gives details of many rare or unique pieces in the RA Collection, which are the only ones of their type yet recorded.; Following the publication in 2011 of Volumes I, II and III of The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics. A Collector's Vision, and the success of the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2016, Global by Design. Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection, showing highlights from the collection, the fourth volume documents the most significant new acquisitions made by the collector after the publication of the first 3 volumes. Bringing together passion and an informed vision, the collector, Renato de Albuquerque, has created one of the most coherent and comprehensive collections of Chinese ceramics made for export markets. Encompassing works from the Tang (618-907) to the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, the collection is central to the understanding and study of Chinese export art. Comprising a selection of 206 pieces or groups of pieces, this boxed, hardcover book brings new research on the intercultural connections that are central to the collection. As with the previous volumes, the fourth book is written by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, one of the world's foremost experts on Chinese export porcelain. Her careful research expounds on the collector's choices and the complex, multi-layered history of Chinese earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Published in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies, this work supplements what has been described as "the best work yet written on Chinese export porcelain" (The Economist, 2011). The fifth volume of The RA Collection is the first in the series to depart from ceramic to other fields of cross-cultural art. The RA Collection of Chinese Enamelled Copper. A Collector's Vision focuses on pieces made of enamelled copper which were produced in parallel with Chinese porcelain during the 18th and early 19th centuries. As its predecessors, this book illustrates highlights from the collection, works of art representative of the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures in the modern era. Each piece has been carefully selected by the collector, Renato de Albuquerque, ensuring that the overall collection can serve as a source for the study and furthering of knowledge in the field. New.

PINTO DE MATOS, MARIA ANTONIA; AND KERR, ROSE
Tankards and Mugs: Drinking from Chinese Export Porcelain
Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing, London. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780955743276). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover; 352 pages with 431 colour illustrations; 23.5 x 29.7 cm; 2.4 kg; LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES.; The first comprehensive study on Chinese Porcelain Tankards and Mugs, with pieces from 23 museums, 18 private collectors and 3 dealers, from around the world.; Tankards and mugs are vessels that illuminate many aspects of social, economic and art history. This book focuses on Chinese export porcelain tankards and mugs dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Drinking is a pleasurable and social activity, enjoyed by most cultures of the world. In China, alcohol was used for feasts, festivals and religious ritual as early as the Neolithic age. In the West, beer, cider and porter were drunk on both convivial and solemn occasions. Vessels used to contain drink were often treasured containers, and time and care was spent on their manufacture and decoration. They needed to be practical, functional utensils, but also beautiful. When Chinese porcelain reached Europe an ideal match was made. Top quality wares were highly regarded luxury items, and they included tankards and mugs. This book is illustrated with 197 Chinese porcelain tankards and mugs, each catalogued and referenced in detail. They range from blue and white to delicately enamelled vessels, some emblazoned with western designs and coats of arms. The introductory essays discuss the history of a vessel that played an important role in society, stimulating design and decoration while also being symbolic of kinship and harmony. New/No Jacket.

D'ARGENCÉ, RENÉ-YVON LEFEBVRE
Chinese Ceramics in the Avery Brundage Collection: A Selection of Containers, Pillows, Figurines, and Models from Neolithic Period to Modern Times
The de Young Museum Society, San Francisco. 1967. Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback; 20 x 22.5 cm; 0.5 Kg; 166 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior in very good condition.; "Chinese Ceramics is the second of a series of volumes presenting a cross-section of the various departments of the Avery Brundage collection of Asian Art. The items shown here do not represent more than 10 percent of the holdings of a department which contains over 1500 objects and is so comprehensive that it could easily furnish all the necessary material for a detailed history of the evolution of Chinese ceramics. Our choice was dictated by two criteria: esthetic quality and historical interest. Again, we have felt the difficulties inherent in a selection of this kind. At the time of the international symposium on the arts of Asia which was held in the Brundage Wing in the fall of 1966, some specialists observed that a number of our best or most interesting 'pots were not on display but hidden away in storage.' Despite the efforts made in this publication to alleviate this shortcoming, we do not feel that we have been entirely successful. Too many fine objects had to be left out because they belong to the category of 'historical half-tones'; on the other hand, some significant but not necessarily spectacular landmarks could not be included." excerpt from the preface by René-Yvon Lefebvre D'Argencé, Director, Avery Brundage Foundation, 1967.
