Paris, Bonne. 1780. Book, La Nouvelle Bretagne engraved by Andre for Rigobert Bonne published Paris circa 1780. This is based on maps by Carteret Cook's voyages and the discoveries of Captain Dampierre. The main part of the map is taken up by an engraving of part of New Guinea and the rest has small inset maps of various bays and harbours in the region including the south coast of Mindanao. On paper which once had a central fold. Size 44 by 31 cm. Uncoloured. Good to VG. Images available.

Six scales include French leagues and Egyptian stades (stadia?). The top right-hand corner has a 12 by 10 cm decorative vignette which includes the title. Containing some poetical pieces by Dr. Johnson relative to the Tour and never before published; a series of his Conversations Literary Anedotes and Opinions of Men and Books: with an account of the Distresses and Escape of the Grandson of King James II in the year 1746. The reverse of the title page has a small signature in ink. With the bookplate bearing the crest of the Irish Waller family to the front pastedown. Hand-coloured. With two decorative cartouches one containing the title the other the dedication to the Duke of Grafton. A map that manages to combine a wealth of local detail with decoration. A key provides information on mills churches schools abbeys rectories and vicarages market days distances between towns etc. Various panels of text around the margins of the map give information of the main towns commerce agriculture etc. Complete with original slipcase. Some wear to the reverse of the folds so that occasionally a glimpse of light shows through and two small folds have been strengthened with archival standard linen tape. With these qualifications Good condition in Good slipcase. Images available.

Distances from York are indicated by a series of fine concentric circles radiating outwards. Key gives information on churches & chapels seats and villages market towns Roman roads post stages and borough towns. Columns of information on each side of the map list the nobility and gentry of the county with their county seats. A decorative cartouche to the bottom l/hand corner contains the dedication to the Duke and another to the bottom r/hand corner the title of the map.Complete with original slipcase worn but intact and with the label of the London printer and bookseller. Occasional signs of use to sea areas and some of the sections are beginning to lift from the line at the edges but overall in Good to VG condition.
