There is a bound-in hand-drawn pen and ink heraldic device that is on a postally used sheet of paper dated 1810 near the middle of the book. Leather is worn, gilt on spine faded (still bright on covers however), bookplate on front paste-down belonging to John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn (1811-1877), a Member of the US House of Representatives from New York (1863-1865 and 1867-1869), spine ends and corners bumped with wear, hinges cracked with separation in spots, writing in French on front end papers and page facing the title page, a few instances of inked markings in book, several interior pages toned, a previous owner has neatly written page numbers where there are no printed page numbers. Jacques Marquette (1637-1675) was a French Jesuit missionary who founded the first European settlement in Michigan and was the first European to explore and map the northern portion of the Mississippi River Valley. Claude Allouez (1622-1689) was also a French Jesuit missionary. He explored North America and started missions among the indigenous people near Lake Superior. Leather is scuffed at extremities, most notable is a 1 1/2" strip of scuffed leather starting at head of spine, end papers lightly stained from glue, otherwise very good condition.
