Kohima: The Furthest Battle
Spellmount, 2009. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. 9781862274884 Firmly bound, clean unmarked pages; slight creasing to jacket edges. A well-kept copy. By the end of 1943 the Japanese had occupied most of South-East Asia. On 6 March 1944, the first units of the Japanese 15 Army crossed the inhospitable border of what was then Burma, and invaded India. At the township of Kohima they were met by a small, hastily assembled force of Indian and British troops, later reinforced by 2 Division of Slim's 14 Army, who fought valiantly and forced the Japanese to retreat. Described by Mountbatten as 'the British/Indian Thermopylae', Kohima was a turning point in Japanese fortunes, heralding their continued defeat in battle until their formal surrender on 2 September 1945. Using extensive research in primary sources and many previously unpublished first-hand accounts, Leslie Edwards presents a definitive analysis of this pivotal battle. 480 pages. Thomas Elsaesser, A Second Life: German Cinema's First Decades
Thomas Elsaesser
A Second Life: German Cinema's First Decades
Amsterdam University Press, 2014. Softcover. Fine Condition. 9789053561720 Clean unmarked pages, no highlighting or annotations, slight creasing to top of front cover. German cinema is best known for its so-called "Golden Age" - the Expressionist films of the 1920s - and for its long line of outstanding individual directors, from Fritz Lang and Ernst Lubitsch, F. W. Murnau and G. W. Pabst, to Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders, R. W. Fassbinder and Alexander Kluge. But the double spotlight on art cinema and auteurs, reflecting this national cinema's struggle for cultural respectability and reliance on psychological introspection, has only deepened the obscurity surrounding the other side of that history: the face and fate of its popular cinema. A case in point are the first two decades, about which little is known, even though German history has benefited in recent years from a renewed interest in early cinema generally. Critical attention has, however, so far tended to concentrate on institutions, cultural discourses, production companies, or the exhibition situation. Surprisingly few detailed analyses exist of the films themselves and of their (narrative and non-narrative) forms, styles and genres. The same applies to the stars popular with audiences before the foundation of the Ufa in 1917. In order for historians to fill this gap, much recovery and restoration work has been done in the archives. The 1995 centenary of cinema has provided an additional impetus, and scholars have begun to retrieve basic bibliographical and filmographical information. This text makes full use of the opportunities created over recent years by this scholarship and change of policy among archivists. The contributors put forward persuasive arguments for the importance of close examination of some key films surviving in international archives. They focus in particular on the extensive German holdings of the Jean Desmet collection at the Netherlands Film Museum in Amsterdam. The volume is divided into four sections: "Genres and Styles", "Stars, Authors, Audiences", "Case Studies" and "Periodisation and Paradigms". Many individual films are looked at, some for the first time since their original screening. 352 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Film, Radio & Television; ISBN/EAN: 9789053561720. National Security Cultures: Patterns of Global Governance
Routledge, 2010. Softcover. Good Condition. 9780415777438 Highlighting to some pages, slight wear to covers. National Security Cultures offers a tightly argued, deeply researched, and empirically encompassing analysis. It establishes the enduring imprints Westphalian and post-Westphalian state structures have on governance in East and West. And it tracks the variable effects of national security cultures on policies spanning the full governance spectrum. An impressive achievement that will become required reading in the field of security studies. -Peter J. Katzenstein, Walter S. Women on the Early Modern Stage: A Woman Killed with Kindness, The Tamer Tamed, The Duchess of Malfi, The Witch of Edmonton
Methuen Drama, 2014. Softcover. As New. 9781408182314 Clean bright and unmarked, looks to be unread. This New Mermaids anthology brings together four plays which centre around female characters on stage: A Woman Killed With Kindness (Thomas Heywood); The Tamer Tamed (John Fletcher); The Duchess of Malfi (John Webster) and The Witch of Edmonton (William Rowley, Thomas Dekker and John Ford) with a new introduction by leading scholar Emma Smith. A Woman Killed with Kindness is a domestic tragedy of property and marriage, adultery and revenge, and strips bare two women's lives in one of the first tragedies ever to be written about ordinary people. The Tamer Tamed is a free-wheeling and witty comedy in which the place and status of women, and the nature of marriage, are subjected to sustained attention, demonstrating one way in which early modern writers were able to challenge and invert social convention, and to at least imagine alternative modes of behaviour. The Duchess of Malfi is a classic revenge tragedy and masterpiece of the Jacobean bizarre, featuring a severed hand, a wolf-man, and a poisoned Bible. The Witch of Edmonton is a domestic tragedy in which Elizabeth Sawyer sells her soul to the Devil to revenge her neighbours. These four early modern plays plays upset old certainties about gender ideology: less 'chaste, silent and obedient' and more diverse, eloquent, and complex. 584 pages. Quantity Available: 1.
