These magnificent plates show the costumes of Europe and Russia, but particularly beautiful are those of some of the Cantons of Switzerland. André Léon Larue aka Mansion (1785-1834) was a French Nineteenth Century Artist who is well known for his Costumes of the Royal Navy & Marines (1831-1833), Officers of the British Army (1833-1836), Fancy Ball Dress (1831-1832) and Letters upon the Art of Miniature Painting (1823). Rare: OCLC & KVK locate just one copy in libraries and institutions worldwide: Harvard University Library (MA, US). This exceptionally rare suite of plates when issued, was reviewed by The Spectator where it was described as following on from a series of superb costumes "entitled "Fancy Ball Dresses," of which we have had occasion to speak in terms of admiration, and with whose style most of our readers are familiar, having seen the plates in the prire shop windows for these few months past. The same clever artist (who is a Frenchman, by the way) has commenced a new series of female costumes, denominated "National Ball Costumes," which are got up in the same splendid style of colouring, and are equally distinguished for richness of effect and costliness of materials and ornament. National Ball Costumes

Folio. Twelve numbered hand-colored lithographed plates (measuring approximately 7 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 193 x 138 mm. on sheets measuring approximately 15 3/8 x 11 3/16 inches; 390 x 286 mm.) all heightened with gum arabic. The plates are printed by C. Hullmandel and are dated from Novr. 1st, 1831 to Feby. 1st, 1832. Loose, probably as issued, in an early stiff blue paper wrapper with the title label and shelf mark of the Hofbibliothek Donaueschingen. Housed in a half dark red morocco over marbled boards, front cover with rectangular maroon morocco bordered and lettered in gilt. Smooth spine with dark red morocco label lettered in gilt. A wonderful copy of this extremely rare series of plates. We have been unable to locate any other copies. The plates are captioned: "Russia, Kazan, Prov: Potlaki;" "Environs of Naples;" "Hungary, Prov: Phillipowan;" "France, Pyrenees;" "Austria, Schlavonia;" "Spain, Valencia;" "Italy, Bologna;" "Austria, Ilauzi;" "Illyria;" "Switzerland, Berne;" "Portugal, Vale of Almeda;" and "Grand Duchy of Baden." MANSION, [Andre-Leon] (1785-1834). A truly beautiful suite of plates depicting the national ball costumes of countries such as Hungary, Switzerland, and Austria. Andre Leon Larue, known professionally as Mansion, was the son of a portrait painter. He worked predominantly as a miniaturist, creating portraits of such figures as Empress Josephine (1763-1814) and Napoleon I (1769-1821). However, he also had a celebrated career as an aquatinter, producing such notable suites of costume plates as Fancy Dress Ball (1831) and the present suite, National Ball Costumes. The artist's soft modeling of the fabrics and the delicate detailing of the character's faces, all recall the artist's training in miniature painting. This series of ball costumes, when issued, was reviewed by The Spectator where it was described as following on from a 'series of superb costumes' entitled "Fancy Ball Dresses", of which we have had occasion to speak in terms of admiration, and with whose style most of our readers are familiar, having seen the plates in the prire shop windows for these few months past. The same clever artist (who is a Frenchman, by the way) has commenced a new series of female costumes, denominated "National Ball Costumes", which are got up in the same splendid style of colouring, and are equally distinguished for richness of effect and costliness of materials and ornament' (The Spectator, 3 December 1831, pp. 20-21). Bobins IV, 1248; Not in Colas, Hiler or Lipperheide. .

SERGENT-MARCEAU, Antoine-François, Portraits Des Grands Hommes, Femmes Illustres, Et Sujets Mémorables de France
SERGENT-MARCEAU, Antoine-François
Portraits Des Grands Hommes, Femmes Illustres, Et Sujets Mémorables de France
Paris: Chez Blin, [1792]. Seventy-Eight Superb Color Printed Portraits of The Heroes of France Each Followed by "The Picture of Their Most Glorious Deed" [SERGENT-MARCEAU, Antoine-François]. Portraits Des Grands Hommes, Femmes Illustres, et Sujets Mémorables de France, gravés et imprimée en couleurs. Dédiée Au Roi. Paris: Chez Blin, [c. 1792]. First Edition of a seminal work in the history of color printing. Large quarto (12 5/8 x 9 1/16 inches; 321 x 230 mm.). Engraved title-page in sepia, and 156 superb color-printed aquatints only (of 192), by Moret, Ridé and Mdme. De Cernel, after Sergent. Text engraved throughout. Small worm-track on lower inner margin of front board and free endpaper and just touching the sepia title. A few leaves with mainly marginal spotting or staining, otherwise a wonderful example with stimulating and vibrant coloring of the plates. Contemporary half maroon morocco over pink paper boards. Smooth spine decoratively ruled and stamped in gilt with "GG" monograms and gilt lettering in compartments. Bookplate of Joel Spitz on front paste-down. Housed in a later fleece-lined, red buckram slipcase. "This extraordinary work of colour printing, issued in Paris by Blin, included 192 aquatint plates and was published in 48 parts. It carried out a consistent scheme of oval portraiture with engraved description and arms below, followed by a notable episode from the life of that hero or heroine of France, and two columns of the half-page in engraved italic to describe the historical event. Thus it was a book of aquatint and engraving, with no type setting. Sergent, responsible for most of the work, had an active life - art, politics, exile, romantic suffering and marriage. He lived to be ninety-six, and in old age drew portraits of his wife to whom he had taught engraving. She helped him with a few plates in this work. It is, as colour-printing, an harmonious and excellent achievement. These were early days for colour in aquatint. England had not begun to attempt colour printing of this sort.. [The work] showed absolute control and sophistication, using colour over colour in the manner of Debucourt, following Le Blon, and little or no hand-colouring. He began with a black plate, and assembled the colours upon it. The historical subjects tend to be militsry, but include such philosophical scenes as Fontenelle beside his telescope viewing the man in the moon, and an allegorical celebration - with the medallions of Franklin, Louis Seize and Washington - of American Independance."(Colin Franklin). "AntoineFrancois Sergent (1751-1847), who had studied engraving with Augustin de Saint-Aubin, began to concentrate his attention on engraving about 1786, with the first plates for this book. He did not allow his ardent and prolonged participation in the Revolution to interrupt the progress of his Portraits des grands hommes, although the abject flattery of Louis XVI with which it began came to seem more and more of an anomaly. The work eventually extended to forty-eight parts of four plates each. (This copy includes the first thirthy-three parts.) In his dedication to the King, Pierre Blin, the publisher, promised portraits of "all the heroes of France, with the picture of their most glorious deed." The pattern which Sergent followed was established in the first two engravings: a portrait of Louis XVI, and an allegorical plate after Duplessis-Bertaux entitled "Indépendance des États-Unis" (Independance of the United States), in which this historical development is represented as largely the work of France's ineffectual monarch. His likeness surmounts those of Franklin and "Waginston" on a monument with the inscription "L'Amérique et les mers, ô Louis! vous reconnaissen pour leur liberateu" (America and the seas, O Louis, recognize you as their liberator), while a young woman in Indian dress places her foot on the head of a spotted and compressed beast, pssibly intended to represent the British lion. The portraits in the series, most of them Sergent's own work, are uniformly attractive; those of more recent "heroes" may also be authentic." (Gordon N. Ray). Cohen-de Ricci, 951; Franklin, Catalogue of Early Colour Printing, p. 53; Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 1700-1914, #86 (130 plates only); Matterlin 1976-78, p. 66. .

A fine copy in the original pictorial dust jacket, spine slightly faded. With a fine 7 x 5 1/8 inch black and white photograph pasted to the front free endpaper inscribed "To Paul / With best / wishes / Mary Martin. South Pacific is a musical composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. The work premiered in 1949 on Broadway and was an immediate hit, running for 1,925 performances. The plot is based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific and combines elements of several of those stories. Rodgers and Hammerstein believed they could write a musical based on Michener's work that would be financially successful and, at the same time, send a strong progressive message on racism. The original Broadway production enjoyed immense critical and box-office success, became the second-longest running Broadway musical to that point (behind Rodgers and Hammerstein's earlier Oklahoma! (1943)), and has remained popular ever since. After they signed Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin as the leads, Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote several of the songs with the particular talents of their stars in mind. The piece won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. Especially in the Southern U.S. its racial theme provoked controversy, for which its authors were unapologetic. Several of its songs, including "Bali Ha'i", "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair", "Some Enchanted Evening", "There Is Nothing Like a Dame", "Happy Talk", "Younger Than Springtime", and "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy", have become popular standards. Mary Virginia Martin (1913 -1990) was an American actress and singer. A muse of Rodgers and Hammerstein, she originated many leading roles on stage over her career, including Nellie Forbush in South Pacific (1949), the title character in Peter Pan (1954), and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959). She was named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989. She was the mother of actor Larry Hagman. .

 POP-UP; MEGGENDORFER, Lothar, Das Puppenhaus
POP-UP; MEGGENDORFER, Lothar
Das Puppenhaus
Essingen & Munich: F.F. Schreiber, 1911. A Fantastic Movable Pop-Up Panorama Dolls house by Lothar Meggendorfer MEGGENDORFER, Lothar. Das Puppenhaus [The Dolls House]. Eine Festgabe für brave Mädchen [A Celebration for good Girls]. No. 109. Essingen & Munich: F.F. Schreiber, no date, circa 1911. Oblong quarto (8 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches; 215 x 260 mm.). Five fine full-color lithographed pop-up scenes. A few inconsequential creases and a few small expert repairs, otherwise near fine. Publisher's glazed color pictorial boards with original red cloth hinges. a wonderful example of this very rare toy. This pop-up panorama opens to form five scenes some of which need opening or unfolding by the child. There are two outside and three detailed interior rooms of a doll's house. As unfolded to its full length of four feet, people, furniture, and even fixtures pop-out and each of the scenes is rich in detail. There is even a piano with a bust of Beethoven on the top. See Haining (pp. 122-128) who reproduces the French edition of the entire panorama called Maison de Poupée. Due to its popularity it was issued over the years with a few changes to reflect the times; for instance the gypsy cart is replaced here by a motor car. It is rare to find any mechanical that has survived the little hands of children, in such wonderful condition. This is certainly one of the most elaborate and charming of the mechanicals issued by Lothar Meggendorfer. The five movable scenes are as follows: 1. A two-sided corner scene showing the exterior of two houses. On the left is a motor car and several people, and on the right in front of a house with a clear plastic window and an opening door are two pop-up figures, a woman with a flask of wine on a tray and a man standing holding his bicycle. 2. A three-sided shop scene with an opening door and a clear plastic window on the left wall, A pop-up shopkeeper and [his wife] behind a pop-up framed counter. In front of the counter is a pop-up woman customer with her small child and a dog. On the right hand wall are three pop-up barrels and also an opening door. 3. A three-sided wood-paneled room with an opening door on the left. Two pop-up women, one holding a small child are seated at a pop-up table. On the right wall is a pop-up pianoforte with a bust of Beethoven above and a small pop-up seated boy playing. There is also an opening door. 4. A three-sided 'kitchen scene' with an opening door on the left wall, a pop-up kitchen cabinet and stove with a mother, daughter and small cat, and on the right-hand wall a small pop-up desk with a bin and a washing basket. There is also an opening door. 5. A two-sided corner 'courtyard' scene with an opening door on the left and a pop-up woman (replaced head) and her child standing in front of a gated fence, feeding birds. There is also a pop-up dog and a pop-up of three chickens. See Haining pp. 122-128. .

MOVABLE BOOK; MEGGENDORFER, Lothar
Schau Mich an! [Look at Me!]
Munich: Verlag von J.F. Schreiber, 1888. A Rare and Early Meggendorfer Movable MOVABLE BOOK. MEGGENDORFER, Lothar. Schau mich an! [Look at me!]. Ein Ziehbilderbuch von Lothar Meggendorfer. Esslingen - Stuttgart, [1888]. First German edition. Oblong quarto (10 x 13 1/2 inches; 254 x 343 mm.). [10] pp. (including foreword and advertisements at end). Eight colored lithograph plates with movable parts (included in pagination), each with a tab to set the scene in motion. The eight moveables are all original, completely functional and in excellent condition. The 'pull' tabs have all been replaced. There are some expertly repaired short closed tears where the tabs come through the pages and a few mainly marginal light stains. Publisher's gray boards with color pictorial label on front pane, red cloth backstrip, Light wear to board edges and corners. A wonderful example of this very rare and early title. Housed in a fleece-lined, half black morocco clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in compartments. An excellent example of a rare Meggendorfer title.. In over fifty years of specializing in Children's Books including Movables I have never seen this title before (DJB). The movable plates: 1. St. Niklas kommt! (St. Nicholas is coming) 2. Das Duett (The Duet) 3. Die Zimmerleute (The Carpenters) 4. Der horrische Esel (The obstinate donkey) 5. In der kinderstube (In the nursery) 6. Beim Friseur (At the Hairdresser) 7. Hausmusik (House music) 8. Der gefoppte Ami (The teased friend) The title of Meggendorfer's Schau mich an! (Look at me!) plays on the potentially uncanny relationship between actual life and the life-like mechanisms between the book's covers. It would appear that the English edition of Look at me! did not appear until three years later in 1891. "Meggendorfer's reputation today is based almost solely on his ingenious mechanical picture-books for children. These he began to design during the late 1880s, and many of these books went into multiple German editions besides translations into English, French, Italian, Spanish, Bohemian, Hungarian, and Russian. Deservedly, he is considered the creator and chief innovator of moveable toy books, and his printed works are eagerly sought after by collectors of historical children's literature. He produced books with moveable figures, transformation pictures segmented into three parts and thus interchangeable, books with pop-up designs, rotating wheels as well as four-panel slat pictures which change the illustrations through movement, and simply funny picture books for children that would certainly make them laugh and generally contributed to some educational benefit" (Justin G. Schiller's Introduction to The Publishing Archive of Lothar Meggendorfer). "There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s..the mechanisms and operations of Meggendorfer's books—not to mention the originality of his figures—are far superior to any others published before or since. The devices that operated the various figures in Meggendorfer's books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion" (Haining, Movable Books, pp. 65-73). .

 MONNIER, Henri, Boutades
MONNIER, Henri
Boutades
Paris: Delpech, 1830. A Scarce Sampler of Social Pretensions The Jovial Spirit and Verve of Monnier On the Ridiculous, Freakish Vanities of Parisian Society MONNIER, Henri. Boutades [Jokes]. Paris: Delpech, n.p. [1830]. First edition complete as issued. Oblong quarto (11 1/8 x 14 3/8 in; 283 x 365 mm). Hand-colored pictorial engraved title-page and six superb hand-colored lithographs. Loose, as issued. The hand-colored lithograph title-page depicts a liveried black servant offering a group of caricatures for your consideration. Chemised in a half green morocco clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt. An album of extreme scarcity, with no copies coming to auction within the last forty-six years. OCLC/KVK locate only one complete copy in libraries and institutions worldwide at The Getty Research Institute Library (US, CA). The Morgan Library and Museum (US, NY) - have an imperfect copy at the bequest of Gordon N. Ray, 1987, lacking title-page and plate 2 (Dilettanti). We have seen this album once before - it had five of six of the plates (missing plate # 3 Idée Riante) In 1830, Henri Monnier, the master of whimsical caricature satirizing the pretensions of French society, published Boutades, an album containing six hand-colored lithographed plates depicting, with his characteristic jovial elán, the ridiculous, freakish caprices of the Parisian social set. Plate number six, appropriately titled, Explosion, provides us with what is, to the best of my research, the first documented example of When Breasts Accidentally Go Wild. Here, it appears that a young Parisian woman, her size ten tetons stuffed into a size two blouse for maximum fashionably chic decolletage,  has become a victim of her vanity, physics winning this battle of the bulge, public safety  the loser. A person could get hurt, the dame's seins slapping passersby. Though celebrity "nip-slips" - accidental or accidentally on purpose - have become all too common, Boutades is a color-plate album of extreme scarcity, with no copies coming to auction within the last thirty-six years. OCLC/KVK locate only one copy in libraries worldwide, at the Getty Research Institute Library. The Plates: 1. La Lecture du journal. (Reading the newspaper) 2. Dilettanti. (Amateurs) 3. Ideé Riante. (Spacious ideas) 4. Méditation. (Meditation) 5. Tapisseries. (Tapestries) 6. Explosion. (Explosion) Bobins V, 1546; Marie 454-460; Not mentioned in Melcher. .
