In this story, his protagonist Richard Hannay learns of a secret plot by sinister German spies to learn secrets of the Royal Navy just prior to World War I. He is forced to flee from London into the wilds of Scotland, where he learns more about the spies and their designs on British secrets. Also included is Buchan's earlier thriller, "The Power-House." The author, the first Baron Tweedsmuir, later served as Governor General of Canada. "The Thirty-Nine Steps" was followed by several sequels, and was made into various movies and a popular stage play. This edition illustrated by Nick Hardcastle, and introduced by Andrew Lownie. --- In full light green cloth-covered boards with Hardcastle image of Hannay being pursued in mountainous terrain to front cover & spine in red, green, black & gilt tones. Overall, a tight copy with some magnificent examples of the engraver's art.
