¶ Die vier Elemente, die vier Erdteile, die fünf Sinne, die sieben freien Künste, die sieben Tugenden und die sieben Laster: Seit jeher war der Mensch bemüht, die Phänomene der Welt und des Lebens in zahlenmä§ig feststehenden Einheiten zu erfassen. Dabei wurden diese Phänomene nicht isoliert voneinander betrachtet. Vielmehr begriff man Mikrokosmos und Makrokosmos als voneinander abhängige Systeme. Die bildenden Künste haben diese Konzepte aufgegriffen und auf vielfältige Weise zur Anschauung gebracht. Anhand von bedeutenden druckgraphischen Serien aus der Zeit vom 15. bis zum 17. Jahrhundert stellt der Ausstellungskatalog einige der wichtigsten Themen vor. Zugleich macht er auf die komplexen gedanklichen Verknüpfungen in der Wissenswelt der frühen Neuzeit aufmerksam.

¶ Politieke tekenaars zijn opiniemakers, net als de schrijvende pers. Het nieuws 'knedend' tot satire beïnvloeden zij de politieke opvattingen van het publiek. Beelden - direct als zij zijn - zijn vaak effectiever dan teksten, zo blijkt. Tekenaars geven, kortom, mede vorm aan het openbare politieke debat. In dit boek zijn ruim tachtig (spot)prenten uit de jaren 1880-1919 bijeengebracht. De auteurs laten hiermee op een nieuwe manier de relatie tussen politiek en publiek zien. Het was een tijd van grote veranderingen in de Nederlandse politiek. Nieuwe groeperingen als de confessionelen en socialisten sloegen een bres in het liberale bolwerk en brachten het buitenparlementaire politieke debat op gang. En terwijl op straat de roep om algemeen kiesrecht steeds luider klonk, werd binnen het parlement fel gedebatteerd over de onafwendbare grondwetsherziening. Al dit rumoer is te volgen op de afbeeldingen in dit boek. Omdat het publiek gedurende deze periode steeds meer betrokken raakte bij de politiek werd het voor parlementariërs belangrijk gekend te worden. Prenten waren hiervoor het medium bij uitstek, ook als zij de spot met je dreven. Want wie niet in beeld komt, bestaat niet. Een bijzondere plaats nemen de prenten in van Pieter Josselin de Jong (1861-1906) en, met name van Albert Hahn (1877-1918), die als wapen werden ingezet in de strijd voor

¶ Vanaf het begin van de zeventiende eeuw hebben het Amsterdamse stadsschoon en in het bijzonder de Grachtengordel vele generaties kunstenaars als bron van inspiratie gediend. Door de eeuwen heen brachten kunstenaars als Roelant Saverij, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, Jan de Beijer, Gerrit Lamberts en vele anderen de aanleg van en de veranderingen in de Grachtengordel in beeld. Hun tekeningen laten zien hoe de Grachtengordel zich in vier eeuwen heeft ontwikkeld tot een monument van wereldformaat. Niet voor niets staat de Amsterdamse Grachtengordel sinds 2010 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Langs Amsterdamse grachten bevat een representatieve selectie uit de rijke verzameling tekeningen van het Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap die individueel en gezamenlijk een mooi beeld schetsen van de wijze waarop niet alleen de Amsterdamse Grachtengordel, maar ook het genre van het (Amsterdamse) stadsgezicht zich in de loop der eeuwen heeft ontwikkeld. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, amid enormous expansion in global commerce and colonization, landscape drawing played a key role in forging Dutch national identity. Featuring works on paper by Rembrandt, Bruegel, and Ruisdael, among dozens of other artists, this study examines how a hyperlocal impulse in many of these drawings inspired domestic pride and a sense of connection to the land, as they also reflected aspects of the broader ecological and social change taking place. Incisive essays offer close readings that push our understandings of these artists and their work in important new directions, including eco-criticism, land use and environmentalism, race, and class.
