Kiesant, Silke:
Prunkuhren am brandenburgischen-preussischen Hof im 18. Jahrhundert.
October 2013, (22 x 30 cm), 329 pp, German text, 124 b/w/ ills., 40 colour plates, hardcover.

Koeppe, Wolfram & Noam Andrews & Florian Bayer & Ana Matisse Donefer-Hickie & Peter Plassmeyer & Paulus Rainer & Dirk Syndram:
Making Marvels. Science and Splendour at the Courts of Europe.
12 2019, (24,1 x 29,8 cm), 308 pp. English text, 300 colour ills., hardcover and dustjacket.
¶ Innovation, technology, and spectacle combine in wondrous works of decorative art and furniture that embody the splendor and luxury of the royal courts of Europe. At once beautiful works of art and technological wonders, the objects featured in Making Marvels demonstrate how European royalty from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment signaled their status through their collections of ingeniously crafted inventions. Featuring 150 exemplary objects ranging from mechanical toys to scientific instruments, timepieces to automata, this groundbreaking study brings to life a glorious period when luxury, a quest for knowledge, scientific invention, and political power combined to produce remarkable works of art. More than frivolous playthings, these works inspired technical innovations that influenced a broad spectrum of activities, including astronomy, engineering, and artisanal craftsmanship. This remarkable volume explores works in a wide range of materials, including precious metals, gemstones, pietra dura, marble, ivory, wood, bone, shell, glass, and paper. The book's compelling essays address the layered historical context in which these objects were fashioned and gathered into cabinets of wonder at courts throughout Europe; elucidate their complex blending of art and science; and provide fascinating details about the patrons who commissioned them and the specialists who made them

Kugel, Alexis:
Un bestiaire mécanique. Horloges à automates de la Renaissance.
2016 (21,2 x 30 cm), 200 pp. French text, 255 ills., hardcover
¶ French language edition. This book accomapnied an exhibition of of 30 rare Renaissance-era automaton clocks at Galerie J. Kugel in 2016. The gilded bronze zoo includes a pug with wagging tail and oscillating eyes, a chained monkey angrily beating a drum and an elephant with soldiers dancing on its back Some pieces came from the Kugel family collection, which Mr. Kugel recalls playing with as a child: 'I probably broke one or two, forcing the needle so it would animate.' Others were found by Mr. Kugel and his brother Nicolas, both fifth-generation antiques dealers. The technology for automaton clocks dates to Heron of Alexandria, the ancient Greek mathematician who wrote extensively about mechanics. Their popularity surged during the Renaissance, when many were made in Augsburg, Germany, the artistic center of Bavaria at the time. 'If you couldn't afford a real elephant or lion for your menagerie, then you could compromise with one of these,' Mr. Kugel said.

Loomes, Brian:, Latern Clocks and their Makers
Loomes, Brian:
Latern Clocks and their Makers
2008 (21 x 27,3 cm), 528 pp. English text, over 1150 ills. (200 in colour), clothbound.
¶ Lantern Clocks & Their Makers is a detailed survey in twenty-eight chapters of the development of the lantern clock in Britain from its origins in the late sixteenth century, until its demise in the late eighteenth century and includes some unique and previously unrecorded examples from the very earliest period. Also discussed is the type of lantern clock which was used for posted-movement longcase clocks as well as for hook-and-spike hanging wall clocks. Square and arched dial examples are examined as well as clocks made for export to the Middle East, usually known as Turkish Market clocks. One chapter deals particularly with those rare and unusual examples which were housed in standing wooden cases. Another chapter deals specifically with brassfounders' casting marks, and includes several newly-discovered ones, which are documented here for the first time. This extensive book features approximately 400 clocks illustrated by over 1,150 photographs (more than 200 in colour). Most of them were taken specifically for this work and appear in print here for the first time, many with detailed dimensions. Both constructional and stylistic features are explained in a non-technical manner in the author's usual easy style in such a way that they can be readily identified and dated to their appropriate period. No prior knowledge is assumed, which makes the book as accessible to the beginner as to the experienced reader. The biographical section contains all available details of every clockmaker (over one thousand of them) known to have included lantern clocks among his work. Much of this biographical information has been researched from original records specifically for this book, is published here for the first time, and is available nowhere else. This information on the makers will also be of great value to those interested in other types of work from this earliest period of British clockmaking, as many of them also made bracket clocks and longcase clocks as well as watches. The unique combination of these factors makes this book an essential reference work for collectors, dealers, museums, and libraries.

Koninklijke klokken/ Royal Clocks in Paleis Het Loo.
Apeldoorn/Zwolle 2003, 208 pp. Dutch/ English parallel text, numerous ills. (colour & b/w.), clothb./d-jacket.

Reprint 2017 of original edition 2009 (23 x 30 cm), 120 pp. English text, 229 colour ills., clothbound/ dustwrappers.
