Allen, Wing-Commander H.R. 'Dizzy', DFC,, BATTLE FOR BRITAIN.
Allen, Wing-Commander H.R. 'Dizzy', DFC,
BATTLE FOR BRITAIN.
Corgi, London,1975 1st in imprint, paperback, 206pp, [ii] ads., 4pp half-tone photo ills., pictorial upper wrapper (unattrib.), first published by Arthur Barker in 1973, the recollections of an RAF Spitfire pilot, who joined his first squadron in May 1940 in 12 Group, two months before the Battle of Britain, and relates his combat patrols throughout the Battle under his first Squadron Leader, the larger than life Jasper Gillies and later the somewhat lascivious James Fisher. He first flying duties were East Coast convoy protection using the forward base of Martlesham Heath and his first unsuccessful shots in anger were on 19th June 1940 against a Junkers 88l. It became obvious that his whole section was undertrained in aerial combat and they all fired from too great a range. He has gained his nickname of 'Dizzy' quite early on as he had recovered his Spitfire from a 'flat spin', which to this day he does not know how he got into it nor how he recovered. His first successful combat was on 30th August against a Dornier 17. At the end of August the squadron received notice to move into 11 Group and their first new base of Kenley and later Biggin Hill. He took command and relates the loss of comrades and his own close calls until 1942 when he was transferred to a non-operational role for a rest, spending the next years liaising with the USAAF, as advisor to the British army's airborne forces, in staff apointments at 11 and 12 Group HQ, organising the Victory Flypast, etc. After the war he converted to jets and flew the Gloster Meteor. He accepted an appointment as Air Defence Advisor to the Government of the Netherlands for thee years before commanding a RAF Meteor Squadron at Tangmere, being posted to Leuchars and then further Staff appointments, wrappers rubbed and creased, ring mark upper wrapper, spine creased but still square, edges well tanned, good,

FIGHTER SQUADRON - A Memoir 1940-1942.
Granada, London, 1982, 1st in imprint, paperback, 206pp, 8pp half tone photo ills., [i] ads., coloured pictorial upper wrapper by Brian Knight, first published by William Kimber in 1979, the authors account of his time in the Royal Air Force from joining in 1938, his flying training before posting in April 1940 to 66 Squadron at Duxford flying Spitfires, under his first Squadron Leader Rupert Light who was later replaced by Athol Forbes. He became flight commander by October 1940 and squadron commander by the early summer of 1941, he describes the chaos of Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain (including extracts from his flying log September 1940 to February 1941) and, when stationed at Perranport in command, aN unauthorised squadron strength strafing attack on the enemy held bomber airfield at Lannion on the Brest peninsular, This account is confusing as it differs in material respects from the author's first account of this period of his service in RAF in the 'Battle for Britain', published in 1973 by Arthur Barker, slight slant to spine, wrappers rubbed and creased at extrems., corners creased, spine sunned, edges tanned, ink stamp stamp half title, reading copy,
