Nemerov, Alexander, Wartime Kiss : Visions of the Moment in the 1940s
Nemerov, Alexander
Wartime Kiss : Visions of the Moment in the 1940s
Princeton, NJ, Princeton University Press, 2013. Hardcover. Pictorial dj; brown cover, gilt lettering. 175 pages : illustrations. "Wartime Kiss is a personal meditation on the haunting power of American photographs and films from World War II and the later 1940s. Starting with a powerful reinterpretation of one of the most famous photos of all time, Alfred Eisenstaedt's image of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on V-J Day, Alexander Nemerov goes on to examine an idiosyncratic collection of mostly obscure or unknown images and movie episodes--from a photo of Jimmy Stewart and Olivia de Havilland lying on a picnic blanket in the Santa Barbara hills to scenes from such films as Twelve O'Clock High and Hold Back the Dawn. Erotically charged and bearing traces of trauma even when they seem far removed from the war, these photos and scenes seem to hold out the promise of a palpable and emotional connection to those years. Through a series of fascinating stories, Nemerov reveals the surprising background of these bits of film and discovers unexpected connections between the war and Hollywood, from an obsession with aviation to Anne Frank's love of the movies. Beautifully written and illustrated, Wartime Kiss vividly evokes a world in which Margaret Bourke-White could follow a heroic assignment photographing a B-17 bombing mission over Tunis with a job in Hollywood documenting the filming of a war movie. Ultimately this is a book about history as a sensuous experience, a work as mysterious, indescribable, and affecting as a novel by W.G. Sebald"-- Contents as follows: Kissing in August 1945 : Belita Jepson-Turner -- Sleeping Beauty : Olivia de Havilland -- When the world smiled : Margaret Bourke-White -- Sentimental mysticism : Stovall at Archbury -- Hold back the dawn : Olivia de Havilland. Nickerson, Jackie, Terrain
Nickerson, Jackie
Terrain
Madrid, Tf Editores, 2013. Hardcover. White boards with color illustration on front cover, see through dust jacket with white lettering, unpaginated, profusely illustrated in color. "Agriculture is an unavoidable fact of African life: it accounts for 70% of employment on the continent, and 25% of its GDP. Whilst Nickerson's earlier work, Farm, concentrated on how individual identity is made through improvisation, Terrain takes a broader view, focusing on the synergy between cultivation, workers and the environment. The result is a new kind of portraiture that steps away from photojournalism, refusing to merely illustrate statistics and moral indignation. Terrain instead employs a reduced artistic language to draw attention to important debates around crop specialization, subsistence farming and food security. Terrain is about human intervention in the natural landscape, the impact our presence has and the changes it brings about and how, for better and for worse, the world that we make, in turn, changes who we are. Noggle, Anne and Janice Zita Grover, et al.
Silver Lining: Photographs by Anne Noggle
Albuquerque, NM, University of New Mexico Press, 1983. First Edition. Hardcover. White DJ with b&w photo illustration and grey and black lettering; black boards with silver lettering; x, 193 pp.; richly illustrated. To say that Anne Noggle is the only retired pilot who has ever taken a picture of herself showing the scars of a recent face-lift is to give some idea of how unusual both her career and the nature of her work have been. Noggle's self-portraits are a ruthless part of what she refers to as her "saga of the fallen flesh" -- a continuous documentation of the way people grow older. But Noggle cannot be pigeonholed as a documentary photographer. She is an expressionist with a constantly growing vision. Although her work is quite different from theirs, the only recent photographers to whom she can be compared are such famed portraitists as Diane Arbus and Richard Avedon. -- DJ. Good DJ, VG book (Ex art library with sticker on DJ spine and rear pastedown, and minimal markings; DJ is moderately toned with scuffing/smudging; boards have some light edgewear; textblock edges have light smudging; interior is very clean; binding is solid.) .

Norman, Henry C. and Joan W. Gandy, et al.
Norman's Natchez: An Early Photographer and His Town
Jackson, MS, University Press of Mississippi, 1978. Hardcover. Brown and b&w photo illustrated DJ with white lettering; off-white and brown boards with gilt lettering; 223 pp.; richly illustrated. For twenty-one years, from 1875 to 1896, Isaac C. Parker, Judge of the U.S. Court of the Western District of Arkansas, was the law west of Fort Smith, holding exclusive jurisdiction over 74,000 square miles and 60,000 people in Arkansas and Indian Territory. In this colorful yet carefully researched account of the "Hanging Judge, " Glenn Shirley also traces the careers of such famous criminals as the Daltons, Belle Starr, the Buck gang, and Cole Younger; records the processes of the court; and tells how the district's 200 deputy marshals worked against overwhelming odds to bring justice and order. The appendix includes a chronology of the 79 hangings ordered by Parker; a list of commutations and pardons, reversals and acquittals, and bonds fortefied; and two of the Judge's famous charges to the jury, in themselves notable documents of legal history. Glenn Shirley, who has written widely on western law and outlaws, is also the author of "Pawnee Bill: A Biography of Major Gordon W. Lillie" and the editor of "Buckskin Joe: The Memoirs of Edward Jonathan Hoyt." "This is far the best and most readable book on Judge Parker and his hanging court." - Stanley Vestal, "Daily Oklahoman.
