Bound extract from volume IV comprising pages pp. 31-162 relating to the county of Northumberland. Provenence: estate of Ian Robertson of Alnwick with Alderman Adam Robertson inscription and date to fep. Francis Grose (173191) published the 18th centurys most extensive series of illustrations of ancient monuments. A thousand plates with accompanying descriptions, based on his and others views and researches, appeared in the 10 volumes of The Antiquities of England and Wales (177276, Supplement, 177787), of Scotland (178991) and of Ireland (179195). He is noted for expanding the informative text content of the 'Antiquaries' - previously etchings of 'Views' had taken precedence ahead of content.. G: in good condition. Covers rubbed with edge wear and scuffing to leather. External hinges cracked but holding. Backstrip rubbed and worn. Sporadic folight foxing and off-setting - otherwise contents tight .
