STANHOPE, EARL PHILIP HENRY
Life of the Right Honorable William Pitt (Three Volumes, Complete) with Extracts from His Ms. Papers, New Edition, with Portraits, in Three Volumes
London: John Murray, 1879. 1. Hard Cover. Three Volumes (Complete). Original publisher's blue boards, with gilt-ruled titles on spines and gilt armorial medallion of Pitt's monogram on covers. Blind-stamped monogram on spines. Embossed borders. Dark grey endpapers. Illustrated with engraved portraits: Volumes I and II have handsome portrait frontispieces, and Volume III has a facsimile of Pitt's writing as its frontispiece. Earl Stanhope's biography has long been the authorative work on William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806). It is "an indispensable authority on the history of the period." [DNB] Stanhope was an industrious historian who had the advantage of family connections which guaranteed him access to important manuscript sources then in private hands. The earl was thus able to include a great many letters and much other information that had never before been made public. Volume 1 deals with Pitt's life up to the year 1793 (he became Prime Minister in 1784 at the age of 25 and was Prime Minister for almost the whole of the ensuing 20 years); Volume 2 deals with the period 1793 - 1801; and Volume 3 deals with the period 1801-1806. Napoleon, in his musings from St Helena, always represented himself as a peace-loving individual who was opposed by a wicked Pitt. And it was certainly partly due to Pitt, among others, that Napoleon did not succeed in his dream of uniting Europe. An outstanding biography of Britain's longest-serving Prime Minister and an essential tool in understanding the politics of the Napoleonic period. Heads and heels of spines rubbed. All corners lightly bumped. Spines slightly rubbed. Contents near fine with very little foxing. Portraits are very attractive engravings. A very good set of this essential work. Scarce. VERY GOOD.. 8vo (9 x 6"). xiv, 494, (2); 10, x, 464; x, 461, (3) pp. Very Good with no dust jacket .

WARDEN, WILLIAM, Letters Written on Board His Majesty's Ship the Northumberland, and at Saint Helena in Which the Conduct and Conversations of Napoleon Buonaparte, and His Suite, During the Voyage, and the First Months of His Residence on That Island, Are Faithfully Described and Related
WARDEN, WILLIAM
Letters Written on Board His Majesty's Ship the Northumberland, and at Saint Helena in Which the Conduct and Conversations of Napoleon Buonaparte, and His Suite, During the Voyage, and the First Months of His Residence on That Island, Are Faithfully Described and Related
Philadelphia: M. Thomas, 1817. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover. Bound in half red morocco over green marbled boards, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, with four raised bands. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and engraved facsimile. Warden was a Surgeon on the Northumberland which conveyed Napoleon to St. Helena. During the voyages and for some time at Saint Helena Warden attended Napoleon. Following Napoleon's final defeat on the fields of Waterloo in 1815, and his surrender to the Royal Navy and eventual exile to St. Helena, the public curiosity in England regarding the man who had terrorised Europe for years and dragged on a war that had begun in 1793 was overwhelming. Captain Maitland's perhaps better known account of Napoleon's time in the BELLEROPHON, the ship Napoleon had surrendered to, was not published until 1826. William Warden, surgeon on board the NORTHUMBERLAND, the ship that carried the Emperor into exile, was, on his return to England, "in a state of persecution from the curiosity which prevails respecting that extraordinary character." Warden had spent several month on the island and was in a position to observe Napoleon at close quarters. His account is illustrated with an engraved vignette portrait of the prisoner, a folding facsimile and a further engraved plate depicting two medals. The subject matter and criticism of the work sold many editions in the first year. The populace did not like the favorable depiction of Napoleon and the military and literary audience determining that Warden could not have been present at some of the things described took exception to his claims. Warden's French not being strong and his translator, the Count de la Cases' English being confused in conveying Napoleon's comments apparently created discrepancies in the conversations as Napoleon later said that his conversations with Warden were quite different. Edges rubbes, corners bumped and worn, boards rubbed, mild foxing throughout; former owner's wood-engraved bookplate (Daniel Delehanty Vincent Stuart Jr.) on fep, some light pencil sketches on ffep, pencil signature on half-title ("D. Lyman|Washington, D.C.|Friday July 18, 1879") and, in a light pencil of another hand ("Red & Blue"). VERY GOOD+.. Engravings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ix, (xi), 244 pp. Very Good+ with no dust jacket .

0471126772 WEIDER, BEN; STEN FORSHUFVUD, Assassination at St. Helena Revisited
WEIDER, BEN; STEN FORSHUFVUD
Assassination at St. Helena Revisited
NY: John Wiley & Sons, Inc, 1995. 0471126772. First Printing. Hard Cover. ISBN: 0471126772. Publisher's full black cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Includes Bibliography and Index. Napoleon was poisoned! The academic elite hated this theory when Sten Forshufvud first introduced it in 1961, but over the years, working with experts across the globe, he built an increasingly forceful case that an assassin killed Napoleon with arsenic. Assassination at St. Helena Revisited presents the most complete argument yet, and a growing number of authorities now accept its premise as an established fact. (See, for instance, Alan Schom's biography Napoleon Bonaparte.) Forshufvud and coauthor Ben Weider reveal their science and also detail Napoleon's final years of exile on St. Helena. The culprit, they believe, was Comte Charles-Tristan de Montholon, an opportunistic man who had both the motive and means to do the deed. A minor classic of historical and scientific detective work, Assassination at St. Helena Revisited will continue to spark debates, but for now it looks like the conspiracy theorists have the upper hand. The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, tight, square and clean. The unclipped dust jacket is slightly creased at the heel of the spine with a a very small closed tear on the lower corner of front panel, else as new. AS NEW/NEAR FINE.
