Friesen, Ronald
Pioneers of Cheese: A Social and Economic History of The Cheese Industry in Southern Manitoba, 1880-1960
Steinbach: Derksen Printers, 2010. As new! Paper bound, signed `Best Wishes`by author at bottom of half title page, illustrated throughout in black and white, v + Pp418. Includes numerous appendices and bibliography. Tight and unmarked - a fine copy. 700 grams. From the Introduction: This inquiry into the history and development of the pioneering cheese industry in Manitoba grew out of my personal experiences with that gregarious Canadian institution - the rural cheese factory. Although the commercial cheese factory originated in Oxford County, Ontario in 1864 and migrated from Ontario and Quebec to Manitoba in 1882, it found a unique expression in the hamlets and crossroads of the new province. Like a prairie fire the phenomenon spread from place to place, beginning with Nelsonville and Stonewall, then Rapid City and other south-central and southwestern locations before becoming centralized in southeastern Manitoba. The French influence in dairying, emanating from the dairy belt of eastern Canada, found a reception in the francophone villages of St. Pierre, St. Malo, Ste. Agathe, Ste, Anne and Otterburne where early cheese factories were built. They also appeared in the Mennonite East Reserve with cheese factories emerging in the villages of Steinbach, Gruenfeld, ZBlumenort, Hochstadt and Grunthal. The bushlands of Hanover municipality were coming alive with the clang of steel milk cans in 1889. We welcome all reasonable offers on our books.

150 Years of Art in Manitoba: Struggle for a Visual Civilization
Winnipeg: Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1970. Paper bound in illustrated card covers, oblong 8vo, illustrated with plates in colour and black & white, Pp115. An exhibition for the Manitoba Centennial, 1970. From the foreword: The title of our exhibition, '150 Years of Art in Manitoba,' means art created in Manitoba or art created for Manitoba. It includes, also, art created by Manitobans who left the province. It puts emphasis on art and is not mainly a historical exhibition, although the historical value of some works may have influenced us in making our choices. Works are those of professional artists or of amateurs. The exhibition shos painting and sculpture, including drawings, prints, and, sometimes, photography. We had to omit crafts, because the material would have been too extensive, and also church art, although the thought of including ecclesiastic sculpture and painting and stained-glass windows was very tempting.' Very good. 415 grams. We welcome all reasonable offers on our books.
