Epo, Uitgeverij. Paperback. Pp: 347. Net als vroegere koloniale propagandafilms getuigen recente films over Afrika nog altijd van een rauw kolonialisme waarin openlijk racisme aan bod komt. Bovendien komen films waarin Afrikaanse filmmakers met racistische stereotypen afrekenen, amper of niet in onze bioscopen en op onze tv- schermen. 'Het publiek wil dat niet zien en het is niet commercieel genoeg', zeggen de grote bioscoophouders en tv-programmatoren. Nochtans gaat het om een continent waarmee wij, via de koloniale geschiedenis of via de Magrebijnse migranten vandaag, dagelijks te maken hebben. Bij de onafhankelijkheid van de Afrikaanse landen beseften weinige beleidsmakers dat voor de '(mentale) gezondheid en de onafhankelijkheid' films even belangrijk zijn als waterputten. Vaak in de onmogelijkste omstandigheden probeerden Afrikaanse cineasten aan deze miskende behoefte tegemoet te komen: Med Hondo, Sembene Ousmane, Haile Gerima, Bassek Ba Kobhio en tal van anderen. Zij behoren tot diegenen die voor een eigen koers opteerden, wars van het (neo-)kolonialisme. Het ging erom 'de geesten te dekoloniseren', zoals N'gugi wa Thiongo zei. Afrikaanse filmmakers willen in hun eigen verteltraditie, zoals griots, met filmbeelden hun inzichten en verhalen brengen. Zo helpen zij bij de verspreiding van hun cultuur en van hun kijk op de werkelijkheid en op hun dagelijkse leven. Dat wij hiervan verstoken blijven omdat het niet 'commercieel' genoeg zou zijn, is een ernstig democratisch deficit. Want film is meer dan een 'product', het is een hoeksteen van de informatiemaatschappij. Westerse informatieconcerns overspoelen de wereld met audiovisuele producties. Die zijn dikwijls doordrenkt met een koloniale cultuur en met 'eurochauvinisme' ten overstaan van alles wat met Afrika te maken heeft. De waardemeter is de blanke westerling, waarbij voor dialoog met Afrikanen en hun cultuur geen plaats is. Het is de negatie van een continent en zijn inwoners.
