HENNING, PAUL .
Who Killed Cock Robin ? : An Old Story Re-Told In Modern Colour Photography By Paul Henning .
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 36 Essex Street, Strand, W.C.2 , 1945 . 0. First Edition. [36pp.]. 8.75" x 5.75" . Quarter binding of red cloth with grey paper over boards. Upper cover with title, publisher and colour illustration. Light rubbing to boards and edges. Dust jacket with title, a different colour illustration and photographer on upper cover, description and adverts to inside flaps. Front flap price-clipped. Edges chipped with loss to corners, now protected by a removable clear plastic cover. Clean text and bright illustrations throughout. Colophon to verso of the title: "Printed.. by Jas. Truscott & Son, Ltd, London & Tonbridge". A well preserved copy of this rather shocking children's book. ** "The earliest record of the rhyme is in Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book, published c. 1744, which noted only the first four verses. The extended version given below was not printed until c. 1770. Although the song was not recorded until the eighteenth century, there is some evidence that it might be much older. The death of a robin by an arrow is depicted in a 15th-century stained glass window at Buckland Rectory, Gloucestershire, and the rhyme is similar to a story, Phyllyp Sparowe, written by John Skelton about 1508. The use of the rhyme 'owl' with shovel', could suggest that it was originally used in older Middle English pronunciation. Versions of the story appear to exist in other countries, including Germany." - See I. Opie and P. Opie, The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes. *** "The rhyme has been often reprinted with illustrations, as suitable reading material for small children. The rhyme also has an alternate ending, in which the sparrow who killed cock robin is hanged for his crime, although it is possible that that is a later addition. Several early versions picture a stocky, strong-billed bullfinch tolling the bell, which may have been the original intention of the rhyme." - See M. C. Maloney, ed, English illustrated books for children: a descriptive companion to a selection from the Osborne Collection .
