LECKIE, KEITH ROSS
Coppermine
Toronto: Viking, 2010. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0670064637. Only slight wear ; A bright, solid book dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 446 pages; This is a novelized treatment of an actual crime that occurred in the Coppermine region of the Arctic in 1913. The trial in 1917 was the first jury-system trial of an Inuit in Canada and was widely covered by journalists. "The story begins when two missionaries disappear in the remote Arctic region known as the Coppermine in 1913. North West Mounted Police officer Jack Creed and Angituk, a young Copper Inuit interpreter, are sent on a year-long odyssey to investigate the fate of the lost priests. On the shores of the Arctic Ocean near the mouth of the Coppermine River, they discover their dismembered remains. Two Inuit hunters are tracked and apprehended, and the four begin an arduous journey to Edmonton, to bring the accused to justice. Instructing the jury to "think like an Eskimo," the defence counsel sets out to prove the Inuit acted in self-defence. They hear how the hunters believed the priests were possessed by demons about to kill them, and how, acting on this belief, they killed the men and ate their livers. The jury finds them not guilty. The hunters become celebrities, a parade is held for them, they visit a movie theatre and an amusement park, and become guests of honour at socialite dinners. They are given new suits, fine cigars, and champagne. But Rome is outraged that the murderers of its martyred priests will go free. As secrets of Jack Creed's past in the trenches of Europe are revealed, Jack tries to save his two friends, and himself. ". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

LETHEM, JONATHAN
The Fortress of Solitude a Novel
New York: Doubleday, 2003. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0385500696. Only slight wear to book and dustjacket ; A bright, solid book dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 511 pages; "This is the story of two boys, Dylan Ebdus and Mingus Rude. They are friends and neighbors, but because Dylan is white and Mingus is black, their friendship is not simple. This is the story of their Brooklyn neighborhood, which is almost exclusively black despite the first whispers of something that will become known as "gentrification." This is the story of 1970s America, a time when the most simple human decisions—what music you listen to, whether to speak to the kid in the seat next to you, whether to give up your lunch money—are laden with potential political, social and racial disaster. This is the story of 1990s America, when no one cared anymore. This is the story of punk, that easy white rebellion, and crack, that monstrous plague. This is the story of the loneliness of the avant-garde artist and the exuberance of the graffiti artist. This is the story of what would happen if two teenaged boys obsessed with comic book heroes actually had superpowers: They would screw up their lives. This is the story of joyous afternoons of stickball and dreaded years of schoolyard extortion. This is the story of belonging to a society that doesn't accept you. This is the story of prison and of college, of Brooklyn and Berkeley, of soul and rap, of murder and redemption.". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

LEWIS, SINCLAIR, It Can't Happen Here; a Novel
LEWIS, SINCLAIR
It Can't Happen Here; a Novel
Garden City: Doubleday, Doran, 1935. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Black cloth covered boards show some edge wear, gilt print on spine somewhat worn but still legible (no fraying apart from one corner), corners bumped, some shelf soil on boards. Pages lightly yellowed. ; Stated 1st edition, a tight solid book, hinges intact. Deckled fore edges, blindstamped design on front board ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 458 pages; "It Can't Happen Here is a semi-satirical 1935 political novel by American author Sinclair Lewis, and a 1936 play adapted from the novel by Lewis and John C. Moffitt. Published during the rise of fascism in Europe, the novel describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a politician who defeats Franklin Delano Roosevelt and is elected President of the United States, after fomenting fear and promising drastic economic and social reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and "traditional" values. After his election, Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes a plutocratic/totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, in the manner of Adolf Hitler and the SS. The novel's plot centers on journalist Doremus Jessup's opposition to the new regime and his subsequent struggle against it as part of a liberal rebellion. Reviewers at the time, and literary critics ever since, have emphasized the connection with Louisiana politician Huey Long, who was preparing to run for president in the 1936 election when he was assassinated in 1935 just prior to the novel's publication." Current events in the US, i.e. Donald Trump and company, have made this book into a must read for anyone concerned about the future of the US.. Very Good- with no dust jacket .
