One of the sea-mines which it carried exploded, causing catastrophic damage to the area and the first civilian fatalaties on mainland Britiain during the Second World War". Provides a sketch of the medieval background of the office of High Steward which does not itself appear in English municipal life until the close of the Middle Ages. There is also a brief account of the holders of the office in Cambridge until the 1950s. Written when the author was 93. Pp.32, errata slip tipped in, these errors corrected neatly in ink to the two pages concerned. Paperback, owner's name (P.R.Smythe) to top of front cover. G+. ** Florence Ada Keynes (née Brown; 1861 – February 1958) was the mother of the renowned economist John Maynard Keynes who became the first High Steward to be born in the Borough in 1943. She was the first female councillor of Cambridge Borough Council, and was also a town magistrate. At 70 years of age, Keynes became Mayor of Cambridge in 1932. Retiring from public duties in 1939, she wrote a personal history of Cambridge, By-Ways of Cambridge History (Cambridge University Press, 1947).(wiki).
