Friedrich von Hugel
Essays & Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion
London, J.M. Dent & Sons Limited, 1921. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Ex library grey-green cloth. xix, 308p. Some shelf wear at bottom of spine. Library stamping on several pages. Some cracking. Otherwise a tight and clean book in good condition. Baron von Hugel was an influential Austrian Roman Catholic thinker and writer interested in the tradition of Christian mysticism and in religious belief in the modern age. Associated with the modernists of the infamous "Modernist Crisis" under Pius X, von Hugel was involved in investigating Catholic doctrine, Christian tradition, and human rationality in terms that made traditionalists fearful. This book is a series of essays divided into three parts. Part I concerns religion in general, especially theism, and treats of responsibility, illusion, and progress in religious belief. Part II concerns Christ and Christianity and treats of Jesus' apocalyptic teaching, Christianity's genius, and what Christians mean by the words "heaven" and "hell." Part III concerns the Church and Catholicism, and treats of the relationship between Catholicism and Protestantism, institutional Christiantiy, and Christianity's relationship to the supernatural. Good .
