Nice and clean book with light shelf wear. Price un-clipped. 438pp including index. First edition. Review : Augusta Leigh lived, in the words of the old Chinese curse, through interesting times. The daughter of one of the most scandalous affairs of the 18th century, Augusta herself married the horse-mad Lieutenant-Colonel George Leigh, equerry and companion of the Prince of Wales. Leigh gambled and cheated, falling from grace into poverty and taking his wife and seven children with him. But it is Augusta's subsequent love affair with her half-brother, Byron the poet, that constitutes the most remarkable adventure of her life. This incestuous passion is one of the most famous, or notorious, in literary history: it led to the collapse of Byron's marriage and his exile from England, and remains a scandal even to this day. Byron's wife, Annabella, was a mild-mannered intellectual woman with a taste for mathematics; but she was driven to distracted jealousy by her husband's incestuous liaison and declared of Augusta that there were moments when I could have plunged a dagger into her heart. It is all potent, hot-blooded stuff and the temptation to turn this gripping story into a lurid soap opera would be hard to resist. But the Bakewells do something much more compelling in this excellent biography; their restraint brings out the vividness and emotional complexity of the story better than any previous telling. Only occasionally does the prose become swayed by the passion of the subject--as when Byron and Augusta fall in love, drawn irresistibly closer by a physical attraction that became more electric as each day carried their discovery of one another a little further. Byron himself emerges from the narrative as immature and spoilt to a near-monstrous degree, although the Bakewells try to be understanding (of his psychological torture of his wife they admit that Byron appears no more than an overgrown schoolboy, and add but he was feeling hurt, angry and deeply unhappy and was determined to make someone suffer for it). Byron's wronged wife Annabella, and her lengthy campaign to blacken Augusta's reputation are also well handled, and Augusta herself emerges as a thoroughly compelling character: a deeply nice individual who firmly believed that there was no harm in anything that did not damage others. With a passionate romantic streak running through her warm and easy-going personality, she emerges from this biography as a grounded and likeable human being. --Adam Roberts n nProduct Description nThe first biography of Augusta Leigh for over thirty years, this fascinating account draws on a wealth of new material from archives all over the country. It sheds new light not only on this remarkable and courageous woman, but on Georgian and Regency society and the life of the Court. Very Good/Very Good. ISBN: 9780185619754

Dark blue hardback(blue lettering to the spine) with Dj(small nick on the edges of the Dj cover), both in mint condition. The book is new. 144pp including Afterword. Price un-clipped. Product Description: Five years after his death, Stieg Larsson is best known as the author of the Millennium Trilogy, but during his career as a journalist he was a crucial protagonist in the battle against racism and for democracy in Sweden, and one of the founders of the anti-facist magazine Expo. Kurdo Baksi first met Larsson in 1992; it was the beginning of an intense friendship, and a fruitful but challenging working relationship. In this candid and rounded memoir, Baksi answers the questions a multitude of Larsson's fans have already asked, about his upbringing; the recurring death threats; his insomnia and his vices; his feminism - so evident in his books - and his dogmatism. What was he like as a colleague? Who provided the inspiration for his now-immortal characters (Baksi is one of the few who appears in the trilogy as himself)? Who was Lisbeth Salander?. New/New. Product Description: Shane Warne is a cricketing genius. At first there were nerves and chubbiness. Then came vicious spitting legbreaks, followed by fame and flippers. For a long while, there were women, then a bookmaker, then diet pills, then more women - and headlines, always headlines. Now, he has come out the other end, his bluff and bluster and mischief and innocence somehow intact. The man who in 2000 was rated among the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century was, in 2005, bowling better than ever. When Shane Warne likened his life to a soap opera he was selling himself short. His story is part fairytale, part pantomime, part hospital drama, part adults'-only romp, part glittering awards ceremony. He has taken a Test hat-trick, won the Man-of-the-Match prize in a World Cup final and been the subject of endless press speculation. He was the first cricketer to reach 600 Test wickets. He has swatted more runs than any other test player without making a hundred, and is probably the wiliest captain Australia never had. He has revived the art of legspin and electrified the game. For all that, Warne's greatest feat is perhaps his latest. Returning from a one-year ban for swallowing forbidden diuretics, he swept aside 26 Sri Lankan batsmen in three tests, and the following year scalped an astonishing 40 wickets in a thrilling Ashes series where he alone seemed to stand between England and victory. Shane Warne is the best bowler the world has ever seen. He is a sportsman with an extraordinary God-given talent, a magician who mesmerises his opponents. He is also a kid who won't grow up and a man whose personal life teeters between tragedy and farce. Spun Out is his story, guts and glory, warts and all. n nFrom the Inside Flap nAt first there were nerves and chubbiness. Then came wild soaring leg breaks, followed by fame and flippers. For a long while there were women, then a bookmaker, then diet pills, then more women ? and headlines, always headlines. Now he has come out the other end, his bluff and bluster and mischief and innocence somehow intact. The man who in 2000 was rated among the five greatest cricketers of the twentieth century was, in 2005, bowling better than ever. n nWhen Shane Warne likened his life to a soap opera he was selling himself short. His story is part fairytale, part pantomime, part hospital drama, part adults-only romp, part glittering awards ceremony. He has swatted more runs than any other Test player without making a hundred, and is probably the wiliest captain Australia never had. He revived legspin, thought to be extinct, and is now pre-eminent in a game so transformed that we sometimes wonder where the next champion fast bowlers will come from. n nFor all that, Warne's greatest feat is perhaps his latest. Returning from a one-year hiatus for swallowing forbidden diuretics, he swept aside twenty-six Sri Lankan batsmen in three Tests, and the following year scalped an astonishing forty wickets in what sometimes appeared to be a lone stand in a thrilling Ashes series. More than ever he relies on his two oldest friends: excruciating accuracy and an exquisite legbreak. Except that he now controls the degree of spin ? and mixes it ? at will. Like the great classical painters, he has stumbled upon the art of simplicity. His bowling has never been simpler, or more effective, or lovelier to look at. Near Fine/Near Fine. ISBN: 9780593056622
