BACH, ALICE
Women, Seduction, and Betrayal in Biblical Narrative. ISBN 9780521475600
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1997. XIV, 296 pp. Very good. Softcover. Old Testament - Bible. This accessible, readable book looks at the cultural study of the Bible, challenging the traditional mode of reading the women in the Bible. Alice Bach applies literary theory, cultural representations of biblical figures, films, and paintings to a close reading of a group of biblical texts revolving around the 'wicked' literary figures in the Bible. She compares the biblical character of the wife of Potiphar with the Second Temple Period narratives and rabbinic midrashim that expand her story. She then reads Bathsheba against a Yiddish novel by David Pinski, and finally looks at the Biblical Salome against a very different Salome created by Oscar Wilde, and the selection of Salomes created by Hollywood. Bach argues that biblical characters have a life in the mind of the reader independent of the stories in which they were created, thus making the reader the site at which the texts and the cultures that produced them come together. BARMASH, PAMELA
Homicide in the Biblical World. ISBN 9780521547734
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2005. XVI, 253 pp. Very good. Softcover. Old Testament - Bible. Homicide in the Biblical World analyses the treatment of homicide in the Hebrew Bible and demonstrates that it is directly linked to the unique social structure and religion of ancient Israel. Close parallels between biblical law and ancient Near Eastern law are evident in the laws of the ox that gored and the pregnant woman who is assaulted, but, when the total picture of the process by which homicide was adjudicated comes into view, what is most noticeable is how little of it is similar to ancient Near Eastern law. This book reconstructs biblical law from both legal texts and narrative texts and analyses both the law collections and documents from actual legal cases from the ancient Near East. All diese Worte: Impulse zur Schriftauslegung aus Amsterdam. Expliziert an der Schilfmeererzählung in Exodus 13,17-14,31 (European University Studies) (German Edition)
Frankfurt am Main, Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften, 1991. 378 pp., small stain on edge, else very good. Paperback. Hebrew Bible. ISBN: 9783631443736

The Heavenly Book Motif in Judeo-Christian Apocalypses 200 BCE-200 CE (Supplement to the Journal for the Study of Judaism 152)
Leiden, Brill, 2011. ix, 233 pp. Fine copy. Hardcover with dustjacket. Books and writing, according to Jacques Derrida, are always concerned with questions of life and death. Nowhere is this more true than regarding the heavenly book motif, which plays an important role in early Judeo-Christian literature, and particularly in apocalypses. This book identifies four sub-types of the motif-the books of life, deeds, fate, and action-and examines their development and function primarily in Jewish and Christian apocalypses. It argues that the overarching function of the motif is to signify life and death for those inscribed: earthly life and death in its early appearances and eternal destiny in later texts. The first full-length analysis of the heavenly book motif in English, this study highlights a vital element of the genre apocalypse. ISBN: 9789004207264
