For 24 years he was almost the private secretary of the chancellor & foreign minister, Prince A.M. Gorchakov. N.K. Giers was assistant foreign minister, & was in charge when Gorchakov was away from St. Petersburg. Letters from Jomini are from the originals, but Giers letters are copies found in a notebook.
