Lucian of Samasota: (Mayne, Jasper, trans.:)
Part of Lucian Made English from the Originall. In the Yeare 1638.
Oxford: R. Davies, 1664. FIRST PART ONLY. 1st edition 2nd issue, folio, pp. [xvi], 398, [iv] + portrait frontispiece of Lucian signed: W: Faithhorne sculpsit.. As usual pp.162-167 and pp.316-317 are misnumbered as 182-187 and 306, 311 respectively. Woodcut device to title-page, woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces. Some old repairs to frontis at gutter, to title-page verso (particularly head and tail edges) plus a few other places e.g. head of first dedicatory leaf, M1, Z1, and some other smaller repairs; small worm trail to bottom corner of fore-edge margin roughly pp.202-281, repaired in some places; light browning and possible dampstaining to head and tail edges near front and rear; occasional wax spots and tiny scorch holes, final blank leaf laid down.. Contemporary speckled calf boards neatly rebacked in polished sheep, raised bands and morocco gilt label to spine, blind-tooled borders, edges sprinkled red, endpapers replaced. Endcaps, raised bands and joints rubbed, a little chipping to edges, corners worn, a few light scuffs and scrapes. A good copy, soundly repaired. To the front paste-down: small book label of Charles Whibley. To frontispiece verso: various pen trials and doodled faces, plus inscriptions of Thos. Hartopp and Elizabeth Mallory 'Her Booke, 1694'. To title-page recto: two more inscriptions of Tho. Hartopp, and one of Ralph Welles. To final blank: another inscription of Elizabeth Mallory dated 1694 and another (seemingly in the same handwriting) of Elizabeth Welles; in the same hand a quotation, 'One moment gives Invention to Destroy / What to Rebuild would A whole Age Imploy'. This comes from William Congreve's play The Double-Dealer, which was first produced at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in November or December of 1693 and first appeared in print the following year. There are also what appear to be faded signatures on the leather of the lower board, though these are illegible. This version, with its title-page dated 1664, seems to be a reissue of the original 1663 first (the title-page of the first issue is dated 1663 and there is no portrait). The second part of the work is not found here; titled "Certain select dialogues of Lucian: together with his true history, translated from the Greek into English. By Mr. Francis Hickes", it has separate pagination, register, and title page with the imprint "printed for Richard Davis,... 1663". It appears that it was also issued separately (Wing L3425). Seneca, Lucius Annaeus ('the Elder') & Seneca, Marcus Annaeus: (Gronovius, J.F., et al. eds.:)
Opera, quae exstant [...] Accedunt Liberti Fromondi in Quaestionum Naturalium libros & (Greek letters) APOKOLOKHNTWSIN notae et emendationes.
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Apud Danielem Elsevirium, 1672. First edition thus. 3 vols., pp. [lviii], 869, [iii]; [iv], 998, [lxxxiv]; [xxiv], 750, [ii], 316, [xxviii]. Vol I with extra engraved frontispiece and further illustrations in text. Woodcut printer's device to title-pages with motto 'Ne extra oleas', woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. Marginal notes in several different old hands to the first two volumes. Head margins faintly toned, occasional light spotting and a bit of foxing to vol. III, vol. I with unobtrusive repair to final leaf. Contemporary vellum with titles very nicely inked to spines, fore-edges turned in, edges lightly sprinkled blue. Vellum a bit dusty, a few small marks, very good indeed. Vol. I has an illegible ownership inscription in an old hand to its ffep, and a second inscription (possibly reading 'W.W. Kosteri') to the title-page. According to Harwood "the most beautiful and correct edition of Seneca.". Dibdin considers it "one of the rarest and dearest of the octavo Variorum classics: its typographical beauty is equal to its editorial correctness. Scholars who possess it will do well to treasure so valuable and commodious a work." This Elzevier edition is unusual in presenting in its third volume the writings of the younger Seneca, which Dibdin notes are omitted in the Antwerp editions. It contains the best notes available: those of the first great modern Senecan, Justus Lipsius in the late sixteenthcentury, and those of the second great Seneca scholar, J. F. Gronovius. Daniel Elzevier's dedication, to Simon Arnauld, Marquis de Pomponne, covertly discusses the part which Elzevier played as printer for an orchestrated anti-Jesuit campaign. Willems 1477; Schweiger II, 913; Dibdin II 398-399.

Tragoediae, cum notis Johannis Frederici Gronovii. Auctis ex chirographo ejus et variis aliorum.
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Ex officina Henrici et viduae Theodori Boom, 1682. 8vo., pp. [xxx], 785, [xxxix], including engraved title-page. A few woodcut initials, couple of engraved numismatic illustrations. Some light waterstaining, upper edge dusty. Contemporary vellum over boards, title inked to spine (a bit soiled). 18th-century armorial bookplate of Henry Bowles Downing; Downing's autograph (dated 1738), autograph of Richard Thompson, Merton College (dated 1737) and bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to ffep. Amsterdam reprint of the third Leiden edition, esteemed by Dibdin as highly as the first (1651) and last (1708) editions on account of Gronovius's notes and its copious index. He describes the engraved title, which depicts the subjects of Seneca's plays, as 'very spiritedly executed'. Both Richard Thompson and Henry Bowles Downing were students at Merton College, Oxford. Solerius Cemeliensis, Anselmus, pseud. [Raynaud, Théophile]; (Frisius, Andreas Wilhelmus, ed.): Bosso, Girolamo:
De pileo cæterisque capitis tegminibus tam sacris, quàm profanis. Editio novissima aucta, emendata & figuris æneis exornata; [bound with] De toga romana commentarivs, Accedit ex Philippo Rvbenio iconismus statuae togatae, et praeter indicem geminum, quem adjecimus, De modo gestandi togam ex Ferrario dissertatio.
Amstelodami [Amseterdam]: sumptibus Andreæ Frisii, 1671; 1671. 2 works bound as 1, often found together. 12mo., pp. [xii], 379, [xli] + 4 plates, including 3 folding; 84, [xii] + 1 folding plate. De Pileo with engraved title-page and second title-page with vignette (both part of first gathering), many engraved illustrations several of which occupy a full page, with final blank leaf. Very slightly toned but clean, short repaired tear to De Toga Romana's folding plate at gutter. Contemporary vellum, title inked to spine, edges sprinkled red. A few marks and smudges, corners very mildly rubbed, a very good copy indeed. Solerius' De Pileo is a curious work on hats and headgear, pseudonymously published by the French Jesuit theologian Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663). Amongst the numerous illustrations, the engraved title-page is signed by Romeyn de Hooghe; one folded plate is signed by Cornelis Galle. This 'new edition' of 1671 followed its original publication in Leiden in 1655. Here, it is found paired with the second edition of Girolamo Bosso's work on Roman secular and clerical togas, which made its first appearance in Pavia in 1614. Spelman, Sir John: (Wase, C., trans; Walker, O., ed.:)
Aelfredi Magni Anglorum regis vita tribus libris comprehensa [...]
Oxonii [Oxford], e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1678. First edition. Folio, pp. [xl] 219 [i] [xii] + 7 engraved plates (no.XII bound upside down), of which five are of coins. 2 further engravings (half-page) in text. Anglo-Saxon, Black Letter, Roman and Italic text. Engraved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre on title-page, engraved royal arms at head of dedication (to Charles II). A few marginal pencil marks. Gathering K toned. Contemporary speckled calf, possibly later gilt title and rules to spine, marbled edges. Joints worn and just starting at head, head cap worn, still very good. Armorial bookplate of Gaddesden Library to front pastedown, and 'Gaddesden Park' pencilled to ffep. First edition of this life of Alfred the Great by the author and Royalist Sir John Spelman (1594-1643). It is believed to have been translated from the original English by Christopher Wase (1627-1690), the head of the Oxford university press, and edited by Obadiah Walker (1616-1699), the Master of University College Oxford. "[Spelman's] Life of Alfred was originally dedicated to Charles i, but the new dedication points out a quite special resemblance between Alfred's life and that of Charles ii, who had lived so long in exile" (Madan). Suarez, Francisco:
Brixiae [Brescia]: apud Bartholomæum Fontanam, 1628. 4to., pp. [viii], 517, [I]. Printer's device to title-page, woodcut initials, decorative headpieces, wide margins. A little toned around the text, pp.41-46 a little crumpled at top corner, dampstaining to lower fore edge corner approx pp.95-100 making the paper fragile and causing some small holes (not affecting text), tiny worm trail at edge of gutter pp.287-302, approx 1cm wax spot to p.294 affecting but not obscuring text. Contemporary limp vellum, title extravagantly inked to spine in an old hand. Spine darkened, some spotting, thongs snapped at upper joint causing the binding to loosen with binders waste that has been used as a spine lining also coming away, rear joint firm, ffep a bit ragged at edges, pastedowns lifting, still good overall. MS notes to endpaper verso opposite title-page, dated 1648. A few scraps of paper with illegible MS in an old hand loosely inserted. Seemingly rare in libraries in the British Isles, with COPAC finding only two copies, in the Bodleian and in Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Theologian Francisco Suárez (1548-1617) read philosophy and theology at the Society of Jesus at Salamanca and was ordained priest in 1572. He taught at the universities of Alcalá de Henares, Salamanca and Coimbra, as well as in Rome. He was one of the most highly respected thinkers of the Second Scholasticism, alongside Domingo de Soto and Roberto Bellarmino. This work on sacramental confession numbers among the 58 works of Jesuit penitential literature published between '1554 (when the first manual for confessors was published) and 1650 (when approximately the Jansenists began three campaign against this literature)' complied by Maryks in his Saint Cicero and the Jesuits (2008). Maryks mentions in a footnote the omission of this, Suárez's contribution to Probabilism, from his biography.
