In ijzersterke plots zet Wodehouse met subtiele humor en een perfect gevoel voor nuance zijn personages neer in het Engeland van net voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In zijn werk neemt hij het Victoriaanse Engeland vaak op de hak. De verhalen spelen zich af in landhuizen waar butlers waken over het welzijn van hun heer en waar klaplopers zoals Ukridge met mooie verhalen hun slag willen slaan. De kleding is deftig en gepast, met slobkous, wandelstok en hoge hoed.
