George Condo - Mental States
Hayward Pub, 2011. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 172. Straddling the line between comedy and tragedy, the grotesque and the beautiful, George Condo's rich pictorial inventions have made him one of the most inventive painters of his generation and one whose work has become increasingly influential. This book surveys Condo's career from 1982 up to the present day, focusing on his portrait paintings but also including a selection of sculptural busts made in precious substances such as gold and bronze. It will be organised thematically exploring the artist's relationship to art history, as well as the shifting responses in his work to popular culture and contemporary society. This survey, which includes essays by Will Self, Ralph Rugoff and Laura Hoptman, along with a specially commissioned short story by David Means, is published to accompany a major exhibition in the USA and Europe: New York (January - May 2011), Rotterdam (June - September 2011), London (October 2011 - January 2012), and Frankfurt (February - May 2012). ESSAYS BY DAVID SYLVESTER; JONATHAN CRARY AND; WILL SELF.
Battersea - Vera Lutter
London: Gagosian Gallery, 2004. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). ISBN: 1932598073. Light shelfwear. ; 33.5 x 28.5cm; 66 pages; Exhibition Gagosian Gallery - October 14 - November 27, 2004. "...the most heavy-duty pieces are Vera Lutter's monumental studies of Battersea power station. Lutter uses a converted shipping container as a camera obscura: alchemical it may be, but you'd have difficulty slipping one of those into your handbag." Alfred Hickling, 25 Jan 2007, The GuardianGagosian Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Vera Lutter's monumental camera obscura photographs. The exhibition features the highly anticipated Battersea Power Station project as well as significant projects completed over the past eight years...Battersea Power Station, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, is a remarkable relic of the Industrial Age, having provided London with electricity for nearly 50 years until its closure in 1982. Since then, this historical landmark has stood dormant for over two decades, until now, as construction is currently underway to redevelop the site into an entertainment and leisure destination. Fascinated by the future duality of the Power Station, Lutter has selected the site, a remnant of the past, before its impending transformation. Using room-sized structures, Lutter often inhabits the camera during the long exposures, which can last hours, days or even weeks. The camera obscura works with the premise that when light passes through a small hole into a darkened chamber it produces an inverted image on the opposite wall and projects Lutter's inverted subjects onto photographic paper, allowing each photograph to be developed as a unique negative. The ethereal images that result from this process allow an extraordinary interpretation of the industrial landscape for the viewer. Vera Lutter's photographs have been exhibited at the Kunsthaus Graz, Austria; the Kunsthalle, Basel; Dia Art Foundation, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among other locations here and abroad." Gagosian Gallery. Very Good with no dust jacket .
