(READER'S DIGEST)
The Reader's Digest Twentieth Anniversary Anthology
Pleasantville, NY, The Reader's Digest Association, 1941. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Beige paper over boards with brown lettering and decorations, pictorial dust jacket. 123pp. Small line drawings. Very good/good plus. Abrasions to both pastedowns from jacket flaps; jacket edgeworn, scuffed and age toned, with some tiny edge chips and archivally closed (on verso) edge tears -- but complete and overall fairly attractive. A tight and nice first edition of this (to cite front jacket panel) "selection of the most outstanding articles published in The Reader's Digest during the past twenty years." A panel of a dozen literary notables made the final article selection, and this copy bearson front flyleaf choice autograph additions from two of that distinguished group: At top is a fine heavy stock 4¼" X 3½" card bearing the printed message "'So Long Until Tomorrow' / Sunoco News Voice of the Air" signed large and bold by LOWELL THOMAS, undated but likely of 1930s vintage; and tipped below this is an Autograph Note Signed from KATHLEEN NORRIS on a buff heavy stock 5" X 3" postal card, n.p. n.p. [postal cancellation Palo Alto, CA,18 April 1934]. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War Scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). "Dear Mr. Gates," she pens handsomely in black ink, "I'm sorry, but I was in China -- hence delay," signing boldly. Thomas (1892-1981) was a renowned journalist, author and professional traveler well known to film fans as the voice of "Movietone News" for many years and later host of television travel series. Norris (1880-1966) was a California newspaper columnist and for a half century one of the most popular, prolific and highly-paid novelists in the U.S. cranking out almost 100 novels between 1911 ("Mother," her first) and 1955 ("Through a Glass Darkly," her last). .
