Chez Edme Martin et Sébastien Larbre-Cramoisy, AParis 1668, In 4 (19x25,8cm), (16) 795pp. (6) (1bc.), relié. Edition originale, peu courante. Portrait of Andreas Colyns de Nole (1590-1638, Flemish Sculptor), from Gillis Hendricx's First Edition of Icones Principum Virorum Doctorum, Pictorum Chalcographorum Statuariorum Nec Non Amatorum Pictoriae Artis Numero Centum. (Mauquoy-Hendrickx 34, State VI/VI)
Antwerp: Gillis Hendricx, 1645. Engraving on laid paper with letters watermark (Mauquoy-Hendrickx 337). 24.6 x 16.5 cm. (sheet). Very Good. Sheet trimmed to or within the plate mark. Minor surface soiling. Short tear at lower right sheet corner. "Sir Anthony Van Dyck stands out as the solitary great etcher of the school. Portrait etching had scarcely had an existence before his time, and in his work it suddenly appears at the highest point ever reached in the art" (Hind, p. 165). "The plan of this publication took shape after Van Dyck returned from Italy (1626) and before he went to England (1632). He made careful preparatory drawings in chalk and brush for the publication. He directed and revised the work of the engravers, the best of the Rubens circle; he collaborated with his etching needle in some of the plates and himself etched the most beautiful set, mainly portraits of artists. One of the most brilliant in human characterization is the portrait of Peter Brueghel the Younger, son of the great Peasant Brueghel. It is remarkable that the etching appeared in this sketchy form in the book, proving that the master regarded it as finished. All interest is focussed on the wonderful had. The first edition was published in Antwerp in 1635-1636. Yet it was not complete, and the title-page did not appear before the Gillis Hendricx edition of 1645, engraved by Jacob Neels" (Benesch, Artistic and Intellectual Trends, p. 32.) (STEVENSON Adlai E., II), In Memoriam: Adlai Ewing Stevenson, 1900-1965
(STEVENSON Adlai E., II)
In Memoriam: Adlai Ewing Stevenson, 1900-1965
[Princeton], Privately printed, 1972. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. ix, 69pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Near fine. Light inoffensive stain on outer page edges. Bright and tight first edition of this memorial tribute, limited to 1000 copies printed for Stevenson's Princeton University class of 1922. This unique family copy hails from the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930). Tipped in is an Autograph Letter Signed from a Lawrence Lewis Anderson Jr. 2pp (single leaf), 5" X 8", Princeton, NY, 9 December 1973. Very good. Boldly penned in blue ballpoint, it reads in part: "Herewith a copy of a small book privately printed by P-ton Class of 1922 at the time of presentation of the bronze bust of A.E.S. to the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International affairs here. I have sent two other copies to Nance [Stevenson], along with the name and address of the sculptress of the bust.. The book is a bit parochial (and oriented to Class of '22), but you may find interest in the address by George Kennan -- and in the speech by Adlai III. Mrs. Chandler had a brother in my class (1918), but he was just a nodding acquaintance of mine. The copies of the little book are supplied with the good wishes of the Class of '22.." Signed simply "L.L.A." Elisabeth Gordon Chandler (1913-2006) sculpted the superb head-and-shoulders bust of Stevenson that serves as this book's frontispiece, and her brother Harry Brace Gordon Jr. (1896-1961) was the classmate of Anderson's to which he refers. Tipped facing the half-title page is a heavy stock 4½" X 3" printed "With the Compliments of the Class of 1922" card (with scribbled note "One for Mr. Anderson and Two for the Senator's Lady"). .

CHARLES PRINCE Of WALES, &c. Regent of Scotland, England, France and Ireland, and the dominions thereunto belonging. Charles P.R. Whereas we are certainly informed. That the Elector of Hanover has taken upon him to summon a Parliament ...
[Edinburgh]: , 1745. 1st printing (ESTC T30512). Broadside, printed recto only. Complete printed text supplied on request. Large headpiece [4.3 cm x 15 cm]. Large initial capital letter 'W'. 30.3 cm x 22 cm. On an old mount, broadside previously folded and repaired with slight loss of a few letters, not affecting sense or legibility. A triangular section to the upper right blank margin lost & supplied [no text affected]. Some expected age-toning & soiling. A Good copy. Charles best known today as the instigator/leader of the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745, in his effort to restore an absolute monarchy to the United Kingdom, which culminated in defeat at the Battle of Culloden, essentially signaling the end of the Jacobite cause. This broadside, issued at the apex of the rebellion, highlights the extent of Charles' belief in his claim to the throne, for in it he declares the parliament at London to lack legitimacy; next, he brands traitor & rebel all who attend said parliament; and finally, he declares the "pretended union of these Kingdoms now at an End." A very rare survivor of this tumultous time of British history, at the time of cataloguing, this broadside is known in only 6 copies [per ESTC], none on this side of the pond.
