EVANS, PETER.
Rails To Rubicon. A History of the Rubicon Forest.
First Edition; 4to; pp. viii, 200; illustrated endpapers, frontispiece, numerous b/w illustrations, bibliography, index; original cloth, dustjacket, signed by author on title page, fine copy. Melbourne, Light Railway Research Society Of Australia, 1994. Although sawmilling forms the central theme of this book, it is not the only one. Forests provide a seasonal home to Aboriginal people and to the pastoralists who followed and displaced them. Fire is a major theme in forest history and the book describes the fire practices of the graziers using the forest and the fire-exclusion policies of the forest managers who eventually forced them out. The utilisation of the water resources of the forest is also explored, and a chapter describes the historic Rubicon hydroelectric scheme.
