First edition of what many consider to be America's first epic poem, blending religious allegory with the recent events of the American Revolution and George Washington. Timothy Dwight was an American educator and minister. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the covers, with minor soiling and staining. Spine rather darkened. Leather split along the entire front hinge. Covers a bit bowed. Three purple ink stamps on the first end paper and inside front cover, belonging to the previous owner William C. Byer, a Free-will Baptist minister, who apparently really wanted everyone to know this was his book. One stamp on the rear inside cover. Another ownership signature and pencil on the inside front cover. Sabin 21548. Good .

The first edition.Very scarce work. This pamphlet is comprised of a discourse delivered by Timothy Dwight on the subject of the National Fast, delivered on August 20th, 1812 in Yale College Chapel.Timothy Dwight was an American educator, minister and theologian, being a prominent member of staff at Yale College, becoming the eighth president of the institution in 1795. This text was published at the request of the students, being intended as a supplement for Dwight's previous lecture delivered on the same subject. Textblock is unbound from publisher's external wraps. Externally, generally smart, with light edge wear and age toning. Small remnants of the external wrap's adhered to the backstrip. Ink inscription to the front cover, with the odd handling mark. A small amount of loss to the wrap to the centre of the cover, causing loss to text on the verso. Internally, generally firmly bound, with staples loosening slightly. Pages a little age toned, with the odd spot or handling mark. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
