C'est en outre la première fois qu'on trouve dans un livre de l'auteur le terme Evolution pour conceptualiser la pensée de darwin (p2. en fin du premier paragraphe). Le terme sera ajouté à la sixième édition de L'origine des espèces. Darwin fait paraître en 1859 ""De l'origine des espèces"", et c'est seulement 13 ans plus tard, dans La descendance de l'homme qu'il démontre que l'homme est le descendant d'espèces préexistantes, en développant la théorie de la sélection sexuelle, facteur de l'évolution des espèces et de leurs différenciations.
