Abel Chapman
Bird-Life of the Borders: Records of Wild Sport and Natural History on Moorland and Sea
London, Gurney and Jackson, 1889. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of this ornithological study of the Anglo-Scottish border, accompanied by numerous in-text illustrations and eleven plates by the author. Abel Chapman draws on notes taken over a period of forty years in this ornithological study of the Anglo-Scottish border. With numerous in-text illustrations, and eleven plates by the author, collated and complete. Following several introductory chapters to the seasonal variation in bird life, migrating patterns, and diseases of birds at the borders, Chapman goes on to share his observations of broad range of bird species including wildfowl, grey geese, grebes, and ducks. The Sunderland-born naturalist and hunter contributed towards saving the Spanish Ibex from extinction, and helped establish the first game reserve in South Africa. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, with an ink inscription to the half title. The volume previously belonged to the library of Stephenson Robert Clarke, who was a British Army officer, naturalist, and horticulturalist. Clarke collected and described many bird species whilst being posted in Africa, before gifting them to the British Museum in 1923. Rebacked in the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, spine, and the joints, a little more so to the fore edge of the front board. With a small tear in the cloth near the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from the odd handling mark, pages are bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: Abel Chapman. Very Good .
