The Freehold Young Ladies' Seminary was founded in 1844 in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey, by Reverend Daniel V. McLean, Judge Thomas G. Haight, and John Hull. Amos Richardson (1812-1881), who inscribed the current pamphlet, was hired as the first Principal and his wife Ruth was one of the teachers. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Richardson brought 7 students with him from new England and commenced the first lesson in the new seminary on May 7, 1845. Amos would eventually purchase the seminary from its founders and would greatly expand it in 1854. During the construction of the new buildings, he was permanently blinded in an accident on the site, but continued to serve as principal until his death, for a total of 36 years. Although the curriculum of the school included Christian and "finishing school" education (French, music, etc.), the school would become well-known for its diverse studies of chemistry, geology, botany, Latin, Greek, and Geometry. The address was given by clergyman and former President of Transylvania University in Kentucky Robert Davidson (1808 - 1876), who chose a theme "at once suitable to your (the students) years and studies, agreeable to a promiscuous audience, and instructive to all. Such a theme presents itself in the Study of History. Ill.: 0. 2.
