The publisher of the essay, Alec Flegon, was the owner of "Flegon Press" and a controversial figure in the samizdat publishing circles in London in mid-20th century. He was the first to publish Mikhail Bulgakov's 'Heart of a Dog' and Alexander Solzhenitsyn's 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' as well as various versions of Pasternak's 'Doctor Zhivago.' He did not pay royalties to the authors under the pretext of helping them more than enough with just promoting their works. For that he was resented by many immigrants and was sued by Solzhenitsyn for piracy. He was also rumored to have had strong KGB ties as he was most successful smuggling manuscripts, phone directories, etc. from Russia to England. On the other hand, for his affordable editions and hard work, Flegon had numerous admirers and grateful readers. Ill.: 0. 2.

Adams, Amos (Compiler)
Journal of the Proceedings of the Twelfth Annual Session of the California State Grange, Held at Grangers' Hall, Sacramento, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, 1884
San Francisco, California, Carlos White Printing Co. Steam Printers, 1884. First Edition. First edition; 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [1], 4-71; off-white wraps, printed and ruled with an elaborate border; chips to tips of spine; faint spotting and foxing to wraps (not affecting readability); in good condition. A scarce work from an illusive San Francisco publisher, it documented the proceedings of the California branch of the Grange - officially named The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The social organization, being the oldest American agricultural advocacy group with a national scope, was founded after the Civil War - in 1867. It would claim credit for the ideas of rural free mail delivery, the Farm Credit System, etc. What was most unusual of the organization at the time was that women and teenagers, "old enough to draw a plow," were encouraged to participate in it. Furthermore, it was mandatory that four of the organization's elected positions could be held only by women. Many local granges were established, including the California State Grange, which was founded in 1873 in Napa. Good .

Oakland, CA, By the author, 1934. Typed letter, signed in ink; 12 x 8 1/2; single sheet, text to recto only; mild, uniform age-toning; old, horizontal fold lines; in very good condition. Albert Adelson (1850 - 1943) was a Russian-American resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, allegedly claiming to be one of the founders of the Russian Republic and author of their constitution. The president's campaign against the drought and the desperate economic situation in the midst of the Great Depression prompted Adelson to offer a "genious invention, titled: Overhead-Irrigation and Fire-Extinguisher Wizard." According to him, it could cover the whole country and "120 million souls in the United States of America, will surely be saved ALIVE!!!" Begging for the Government's backing, Albert ended his letter with: "I remain, the best U. S. officially qualified citizen." . Very good .

Akhmatova, Anna
Rekviem 1935-1940 [Requiem 1935-1940] (Interesting Association Copy)
New York, Tovarishchestvo Zarubezhnykh Pisatelei, 1969. Softcover. Second revised edition; 5 1/2 x 7 1/2; pp. 24; textured white wraps printed in black; light rubbing to tips of spine, else minor wear; small handwritten "Akhmatova" to spine; near fine condition. Signed and inscribed by Russian poet and literary historian Gleb Struve, who also wrote the postscript to the current book, to Russian-born American physicist and author Iakov Lvovich (Alpert): "Iakov Lvovich, with thanks for your review of recent scientific publications. G. S. April 1970." Universally hailed as Anna Akhmatova's masterpiece, the lyrical cycle of poems "Requiem" was written between 1935 and 1940 but because of its explicit condemnation of Stalin's Terror - it was not published until the leader's death in 1963 and then only in Germany. The book was not printed in Russia until 1987. Most of the poems reflected her grief for her son Lev Gumilev's 18-years-long imprisonment in various hard labor camps. Gleb Struve (1898 - 1985) - a literary historian, critic, poet, translator, and scholar - joined the anti-Bolshevik resistance after the October Revolution, was imprisoned for a short time, and managed to escape Russia by crossing into Finland with a fake passport. Between 1919 and 1921 he studied at at Oxford University. From 1921 to 1924 and from 1924 to 1932, respectively, he worked as a journalist in Berlin and Paris. In exile, Struve met and became very close to some of the most notable Russian literary figures in exile including Ivan Bunin, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Vladimir Nabokov. In fact, he would become one of the very first critics to write of Nabokov's works in French and English. Gleb Struve would come to UC Berkeley as a Visiting Lecturer in 1946 and would stay on as a full-time Professor until his retirement in 1967. He also taught as a Visiting Professor at Harvard University, University of Washington, University of Colorado, University of Toronto and Indiana University. His generosity and wiliness to help students remain legendary to this day.Furthermore, as admired as he was in the West, Struve also had a solid underground following in the Russia all through the Soviet Era. In his postscript of "Requiem" he wrote he had met Anna in London in 1965 and she had made the corrections for the second edition on his own copy of the book. Iakov Lvovich Alpert (1911 – 2010) was a renowned physicist who would be refused entrance to the Ukrainian Polytechnic Institute because his father was a common worker. His attempts to emigrate began in 1973. Though his wife and he were "formally allowed" to apply for exit visas, the application would be denied..as were the next 26 of them the family filed in the following 12 years. They finally received their visas in 1987 and emigrated to the US. For the reminder of his career Struve worked as a Senior Staff Scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. During his lifetime he would publish 19 books in Russian and English and over 200 scientific papers. Ill.: 0. 2.

Akhmatova, Anna; Blok, Aleksandr; Burliuk, David; Pasternak, Boris; et al
Vesennii Salon Poetov (Spring Salon of Poets)
Moskva, Zerna, 1918. First Edition. First edition; 7 1/2 x 5 1/4; pp. [4], 7-190, [1]; color lithographed wraps with a Futurist design by Georgii Yakulov; rebacked, with some repairs to upper left margin of front wrap and corners; ffep a bit brittle along hinge; in good to very good condition. The most important poetry anthology of the Silver Age, it embraced Symbolism, Acmeism, and Futurism, and gathered the works of almost all of the most famous figures of the early twentieth-century Russian poetry. Some of the 48 contributors included Anna Akhmatova, Konstantin Balmont, Aleksandr Blok, Valery Bryusov, Ivan Bunin, David Burliuk, Andrey Belyi, Maximilian Voloshin, Zinaida Gippius, Nikolay Gumilev, Sergey Esenin, Ryurik Ivnev, Vasily Kamensky, Mikhail Kuzmin, Osip Mandelshtam, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Boris Pasternak, Fyodor Sologub, Igor Severyanin, Vladislav Khodasevich, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Ilya Ehrenburg. Of the 184 poems - 50 appeared here for the first time, including several of Pasternak's, Balmont's, Tsvetaeva's, and others. Intended to be published on a regular basis, the almanac was conceived as a review and exhibit of all poetic achievements. However, this first issue would also be the last, as such a tremendous project would prove impossible to sustain under wartime conditions. Arguably, this publication would mark the beginning of the end of the Silver Age. Its editor, also founder of the Zerna publishing house, was Mikhail Tsetlin (1882 - 1945), better known under his pen name Amari. He was a poet, dramatist, revolutionary, and translator, who would be persecuted and eventually would emigrate to the US in 1940. The stunning wraps of the book were designed by Georgii Yakulov (1884 - 1928) - graphic artist, stage designer, and painter, who was closely associated with many of the major art figures of the time and their various artistic movements, however, he maintained his own unique style and was never a member of any of the art groups. Good .
