Title: Russian Gypsy Songs
Description: Liverpool: Reprinted from the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society , 1909. Softcover. First edition thus (apparently taken and reprinted from a larger publication); 6 x 9 3/4; pp. 4; olive green wraps; few crease lines to upper margin; nick to fore-edge; few minor spots of foxing; very good. Forward in English; 4 songs in Romani with the first one also with a French translation. It is not exactly clear how Augustus Edwin John - the renowned Welsh post-Impressionism artist - met the Demeter Family in Cherburg in order to record their songs. In his introduction he wrote the Demeters were coppersmiths from Baku. He also noted that, though good people and skilled craftsmen, they were chased out of England but they were welcome in France.
