Description: Warsaw: Ofizyana Pegaza, 2001. First edition; 9 1/2 x 12 1/2; pp. [3], 4-359, [1]; original photographic covers; small nick to tail of spine and very minor wear to corners; profusely illustrated; near fine. A collaborative work of photographers, artists, and writers - the book is a tribute to Kazimierz - the famous historical district of Krakow. Initially situated on an island in the Wisla River, Kazimierz became a part of Krakow when a branch of the river was filled-in in the late 1800s. It is best known for being the home of a large Jewish community from the 14th century to the beginning of WWII. After the war, with most of the Jewish population scattered the district was overrun with criminal activities and many historic landmarks were destroyed by people looking for hidden and forgotten Jewish treasures. Nowadays, many Jews are returning to Kazimierz. Ill.: 0. 2.
