Description: Exeter, NH, No publisher, 1781. Unbound. Single sheet, 12 ½ by 7 ¾ inches. Printed on a single side only. A lengthy statement addressing how taxes shall be assessed, giving rates for different items, as well as the amount owed to the state. Somewhat of a form letter, with the city name written in ink, as well as amounts owed. Signed by Nicholas Gilman, who was serving as treasurer for the State of New Hampshire at the time. Gilman was a merchant turned soldier during the Revolutionary War, serving in the Continental Army and taking part in several notable military campaigns. After the war, Gilman turned to politics, and served as a delegate from New Hampshire to the Constitutional Convention, where he was a signer of the US Constitution. He also served for many years in the House of Representatives. GOOD condition. Several horizontal fold creases present, with creasing and folding at the corners. Remains of red wax seal on the center left margin. Several dark brown areas of discoloration to the paper, with general toning. A few small chips missing from the edges. Reverse with ink note regarding the Public Service Selectmen of Dover. Good .
