Foote, Samuel - The Author; a Comedy, of Two Acts. As Perform'd at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane

Title: The Author; a Comedy, of Two Acts. As Perform'd at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane
Description: London, Printed for R. Francklin, 1757. Pamphlet. Pamphlet, perhaps disbound from a larger work, and lacking any wrappers or covers issued. 43 pp. plus a prologue, with a brief ad at the foot of page 43. A satire of the concept of starving writers and their patrons, with the patron in the play a satirical version of John Apreece, who was known as a patron of authors. While entertaining to the audience, Mr. Apreece was offended by the portrayal and successfully fought to have the play forbidden from more performances. Samuel Foote was an actor and dramatist, best known for his comedic works. It appears most of his life was spent living off the fortunes of others or skirting the laws surrounding the performances of plays. FAIR/GOOD condition. Title page detached Spine very tattered and chipped. Moderate to heavy toning. Small ink stain to the title page, with a few small notations in pencil on the upper front title page. Fair .
