Author: No author given Title: Protest of Citizens of New Mexico Against the Admission of That Territory Into the Union of States. In the Senate of the United States. 50th Congress, 2d Session. Senate. Misc. Doc. No. 52
Description: No Place, No publisher. Pamphlet. No publisher, place or date. Presumed Washington, late 1880s. Single sheet, disbound from a larger work. A scathing rebuke of the politicians in New Mexico, in letter form, written by various businessmen and merchants of the territory. The under signers assert that the territory is not fit for statehood for a variety of reasons, mostly due to the corruption of those in power. The writers fear that the leaders of the state would take advantage of the majority of the population who cannot readily understand English, and while honest and hardworking, would be taken advantage of by the current politicians. The authors fear ridicule from other states, calling the current leaders political vampires whose "only limit to their rapacity has been the amount of money raised by taxation." GOOD condition. Disbound, with chipping, tearing and creasing along the spine edge. Heavy toning. Good .
