Pamphlet. 15 pp. A speech considering the readmission of Louisiana to the Union, philosophically pondering the implications of the Civil War and the Southern or Rebel States and their leaving the United States, or Union. It appears Howard favored treating Southern states as foreign countries, and not allowing them the rights of former states. Jacob M. Howard helped Abraham Lincoln and other drafting and passing the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery, as well as working on the 14th amendment. GOOD condition. Heavy tattering, chipping and creasing along the extremities. Minor toning and soiling. Pencil note on the upper front cover suggesting the item was a gift from Henry W. Longfellow of Cambridge, although no provenance for this is available. Several pages unopened along the top edge. Outer pages almost completely separated along the spine. Good .
