Two short speeches against a bill that would grant the president of the United States powers to enforce the embargo act, using the US Navy and militias to do so, and granting rights to arrest and pursue criminal charges against US citizens seeking to avoid the embargo. The Embargo Act of 1807 was instituted by Thomas Jefferson against Britain and France, in an effort to assert US rights to free trade with both countries, and as economic punishment against Britain and its impressment of US navy seamen. The act was unpopular and caused economic hardships to the American economy. GOOD condition. General toning and darkening. Minor soiling, creasing and edgewear. Writing in ink at the top of the first page, with numbers written at the top of each page within. Good .
