Title: The History of Charles XII. King of Sweden
Description: Edinburgh, John Wood, Printer, 1755. Leather. Vii, 215, (14). Several pages mis-numbered around page 140, although the signature marks are continuous throughout. With a frontis portrait. A biography following the rise to power, attack of his kingdom and subsequent war against other European countries and Russia, and eventual demise. With two partial bookplate indicating this was from the library of Benjamin Brown French, a New Hampshire politician who worked served in many administrations in the White House during the mid-1800s. His signature appears to be present on the inside front cover. FAIR condition. Frontispiece partially colored in, in a rather poor style. Frontis also cropped about 1 inch along its top edge, with pages 65-68 cropped along the upper ½ inch and bottom 1 inch, with loss of text along the bottom edge. Heavy scuffing to the covers, with a circle traced into the rear cover. Uneven darkening. Extremities very scuffed and worn. Spine chipped and torn, with flaking, tearing and loss at the head of the spine. Covers weak at the hinges but still intact. Interior text block weak but intact. Scattered soiling and staining throughout, including a large ink spill on one page. Minor scattered tearing and some dog ear creases present. Several ownership signatures and stamps present. Perhaps best considered a reading copy. Fair/No Jacket.
